Feed Your Friends Well

August 11th, 2008

This month’s recipes are dedicated to the most amazing Cindy and Tom of Granite Falls, WA.  They made the following recipes while I was visiting last week.  Incredibly gracious and generous hosts, I mention them here for BAV because they often host meat-eaters and use food as veg-conversion tools.

Cindy and Tom set the standard for effective advocacy.  They are positive and fun, active and glowing with health, and oh my can they cook.  They make it hard for meat-eaters to not like veganism!  They spend a lot of time and money feeding their non-veg acquaintances mouth-watering meals, and they’re just as generous when a hungry activist comes knocking.

When I first got to their house, they made fresh veg BLT’s and orange creamsicle drinks.  The BLT’s you can imagine—just use vegan mayo and your favorite faux bacon.  The drink deserves a recipe, and I have it here, but keep in mind these measurements are only guidelines.  Please taste and adjust to your own taste buds.

New East Bay dining event

August 11th, 2008

Please join us in welcoming Roni, who is hosting a new vegan dining event in the East Bay.  This new event series will occur on the 4th Sunday of every month at different restaurants throughout the East Bay.

“This event is meant for like minded vegans to enjoy getting together discussing veganism over a nice vegan lunch!” says Roni. “You don’t necessarily have to be vegan, you can be vegetarian or just curious what being vegan is all about. We each have our own story to tell. Getting together will be a positive experience and not for people to debate our choices.”

Please join us at Herbivore for a brunch/lunch in Berkeley at 11:00am Aug. 24th. As with all of our BAVeg events, it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet up with new & old friends. Please RSVP if you’d like to join.

Food for Thought: Specious Science

August 9th, 2008

Want to learn more about animal rights or veganism?

Enjoy reading a thought-provoking book and then discussing it with like-minded people in a friendly, supportive atmosphere?

Then join the Bay Area Vegetarians Food for Thought Book Club.  We typically meet on 5-6 Sundays a year, and discuss the book over vegan food.  Our locations rotate throughout the Bay Area, primarily SF and South Bay/Peninsula.  Books are suggested and decided upon by the group.  Ideally we would like to have 8 people at each discussion, but it’s varied from 4 to 12.  It’s always fun to use this meeting as an opportunity to try different vegan foods at local restaurants or picnic-style at Yerba Buena Gardens.

Two + Two equals 1,225

August 9th, 2008

In the real estate market, it’s location, location, location.  The same is true for leafleting.  When you get the right spot, 4 energetic and enthusiastic volunteers like Alex, Kristi, Mark, and Tammy can distribute over a thousand leaflets in less than 2 hours at July’s Have a Heart, Go Veg Leafleting & Lunch activity.

Join caring and compassionate volunteers for the next Have a Heart, Go Veg Leafleting & Lunch activity on Saturday, August 23rd in San Francisco near Powell/Market (easily BART/Muni accessible).  No experience is necessary, just a willingness to help animals and a friendly smile.

Usual Suspects Cafe (SF) closed

August 9th, 2008

Usual Suspects Cafe had a very brief but interesting life span in SF.  On May 30th, we announced the newly opened vegetarian restaurant.  Barely a month later, on July 3rd, we issued an advisory to call the restaurant to confirm opening after the original chefs left.  It continued with vegan Russian food.  Now there’s no food, but still open mic.  The Usual Suspects Cafe was definitely an oddity in the history of vegetarian restaurants in the SF Bay Area.

Bok Choy Garden (SF) Closing

July 29th, 2008

Bok Choy Garden, a vegetarian Chinese restaurant in San Francisco’s Richmond district, is closing on Thursday, July 31st.  Thanks to Michael for the update.

Interestingly, Bok Choy Garden is one of the older vegetarian restaurants in San Francisco. It changed ownership in November 2006.  Shortly after this, Layonna’s, also a Chinese Vegetarian restaurant, opened directly across the street.   Layonna’s closed in November 2007.  Now, eight months later, farewell to Bok Choy Garden.

Millennium (SF) update

July 20th, 2008

An update from Millennium (7/19 via mailing list)

Convert A Carnivore: Now twice a week instead of monthly.  25% discount when dining with a carnivore.

Millennium is no long serving bottled water for environmental reasons.  Instead, they are offering filtered water.  “A charge of *$1/per seated guests affords an endless supply of fresh carbon & UV filtered water served chilled, room temperature or sparkling.” and “*This dollar ensures regular visits from the H2O Technicians of Natura, the highest quality of carbon filter changes & UV light bulb maintenance.  Regular tap water will not longer be available.”  (Highlighting added)

I wonder if you can take home your leftover water  ..  waiter, can you please fill up my 5 gallon jug …
