It didn’t matter if whether you dressed for leafleting in kale leaves or rainbow socks, or merely let your compassion compel you into action, SF Pride was again a landmark event to reach open-minded, progressive individuals with our vegan message.

Sand-n-Surf Vegan Food Party 2008
The Sand-n-Surf 4th of July VFP at Montara State Beach has been an annual event since 2002.

What better way to celebrate Independence Day than with a picnic at the beach. We officially started at 1 pm (although some of us met earlier to setup). It was a deceptively overcast at the beach. The fog layer actually kept the heat in, giving us a muggy, sauna-like atmosphere, close to 80 degrees! Thankfully, later in the afternoon a cool breeze developed, and kept us comfortable until the beach picnic ended after 5 pm.

For anyone planning to dine at the Usual Suspects Cafe, due to staff changes, please call ahead to confirm they are open. We know how disappointing it is to make a special trip to a new restaurant and find them closed, etc.

Udupi Palace, a vegetarian Indian restaurant with locations in Berkeley, Newark, and Sunnyvale, and other cities outside the Bay Area, has opened this week in the Mission District in SF. (Happily, that is not a typo!) It has long been a lament in the vegetarian community about the dearth of vegetarian Indian restaurants in SF while they abound in the South Bay. This is great news for all those folks.
Udupi joins the original Herbivore, Cha Ya, and Cafe Gratitude as the 4th vegetarian restaurant in the Mission.

Sure, we all we wish for more people to go veg. As a matter of fact, I have been wishing for many years for the winning lotto numbers, too.
But there comes a time when we have to take matters into our own hands — and that’s where booklets like “Why Vegan?” or a “Vegetarian Starter Kit” with vegan recipes comes in handy. Leafleting is compassion in action – giving someone the information and opportunity they need to save lives.

For some, it was just another lovely June evening in Berkeley. For the standing room only crowd gathered at the D. King Gallery on June 17th, it was much more. Animal Place, an animal sanctuary & education center in Vacaville, is raising $2.7 million to relocate to a larger and better space. We wanted to do more than just hope they made it, we wanted to help, so earlier this month, we announced our vegan pizza party & boutique fun(d)raiser event.

Three weeks later, we’re pleased to announce that $2,299.30 was raised for Animal Place, and the critters like Frank, Murray and Ernie who call it home.
