Want to help animals, promote a healthy and earth-friendly lifestyle, and have fun at the same time? Then join the Bay Area Vegetarians volunteer team, "Team BAVeg"! As a grassroots organization, we have no paid staff and rely totally on the dedication and support of our volunteers. Our volunteers are the core that make everything happen for BAVeg. Note - these are volunteer (unpaid) positions.
We are looking for individuals who are:
- Enthusiastic about promoting/supporting veg*nism and knowledgeable about veg*nism and animal rights.
- Understand and support our mission and guidelines (see charter and about us)
- Have good communication skills via email
- Organized, works well independently but also a team player
- Located in the San Francisco Bay Area

BAVeg Leadership Council
This is new for 2007. For BAVeg to continue, and to grow, we need other volunteers to help us lead the organization. The Leadership Council is a core group of volunteers who will work directly with the co-founders of Bay Area Vegetarians, Tammy & Chris, to create and plan activities & events in support of promoting a plant-based diet. To put this in context, review the list of current events, and 2006 events.
The analysis of 2006 events supports the dual goals of BAVeg, to build as well as support the veg community:
- 85 Social Events (Restaurant Dinner, Vegan Food Party, etc.)
- 66 Advocacy Events (Letter Writing, Animal Cruelty protest)
- 31 Outreach Events (Tabling, Leafleting)
- 19 Education Events (Presentation, Class)
Each leader, within the Leadership Council, will lead activities and programs, including special projects, to support Bay Area Vegetarians' philosophy of CARE - Community, Advocacy, Resources, and Education.
Responsibilities:
- This is a leadership role -- we'll work together to design and define your role within Bay Area Vegetarians. There are many possible roles and/or projects that we could undertake.
- Recruit and support other volunteers to help with your projects/activities.
Qualifications:
- Understand and support our group's mission and philosophy..
- Self-motivated and reliable.
- Email savvy and can communicate effectively via email
- Minimum 3 months experience with Bay Area Vegetarians (may be waived).
- Can commit for a minimum of 12 to 18 months.
- Ability to provide periodic updates to the Leadership Council, and participate in regular meetings (which may include phone meetings).
Advocacy Team Member
We always need your support to continue and expand our advocacy program, which include leafleting, animal cruelty protests and letter writing parties. These happen monthly at several locations throughout the Bay Area.
Responsibilities:
- Commit to participating in at least one advocacy event every month, whether it's a leafleting, animal cruelty protest and/or letter writing party (LWP)
- Every time you go, invite a friend to join you
- Always have BAVeg flyers with you -- post them (where allowed) so other animal-friendly people will see them
- Sign up for the Team-BAVeg list to stay informed and connected with other volunteers & volunteer opportunities
Qualifications:
- No previous experience required, just a willingness to spend a couple of hours a month to help animals.
- Access to a printer to download/print BAVeg flyers. Materials are provided for all other activities. .
- For the leafleting and cruelty protests, signs and/or leaflets are provided as appropriate.
- For the LWP, topics and letter writing materials are provided as well.

Event leader / Host
We always need your support to continue and expand the events we offer to our membership as well as the general public. We need individuals to host individual as well as recurring events. Examples of an individual event may be a Vegan Food Party and an example for a recurring event would be regular animal cruelty protest, letter writing party or restaurant dinner (see information on event hosting). Note - our focus (as an organization promoting a plant-based diet) is focused on animal cruelty regarding animals raised and slaughtered for "food".
Responsibilities:
- Publicize event to local mailing lists and any additional promotion you'd like to do (i.e. Craigslist or myspace, etc)
- Set regular date and time for event (i.e. 2nd Sunday at 2 pm)
Qualifications:
- No previous experience required, just a willingness to spend a couple of hours a month to promote veg*nism and help animals.
- Must be reliable, and have email access
- Communicate date exceptions, etc. to Tammy (who manages the website event calendar)

Adopt a Website
If you're an online junkie and can help us promote events at other great online sites, like Craigslist, MySpace, Indybay/Animalliberation, or submite events to other onilne calendars - we need you!
Responsibilities:
- Publicize special events to a specific online site
- Use provided template (with graphics, standard text), and then add specific event details (typically available for the event calendar listing).
Qualifications:
- No previous experience required, just a willingness to spend a couple of hours a month to promote veg*nism and help animals.
- Must be reliable, and have email access

Promotions & Publicity Coordinator
We need an outgoing, creative and dynamic individual interested in promoting Bay Area Vegetarians, our programs, and other resources.
Responsibilities:
- Promote BAVeg events to the public via listing in online and print community calendars, such as Craigslist and EcoVeg.
- Research and utilize other free advertising opportunities.
- Promote Bay Area Vegetarians events and resources
Qualifications:
- Internet access, good writing and computer skills, basic understanding of HTML or aptitude & willingness to learn.
- Creativity
- Can commit 2-4 hours/week for minimum of 3 months.

Veggie Mentor Program Manager
If you like working with people, and helping them go veg, this is the job for you! We need a dedicated individual to give this program the care and attention it needs to flourish.
Responsibilities:
- Development of the Veggie Mentor Program including program structure, events, & activities
- Publicity and promotion of the program to media and external organizations and community groups
Qualifications
- Basic understanding and practice of veganism, knowledgeable about factory farming and animal rights
- Creative, with good writing skills
- Can commit 1-5 hours/week for a minimum of 12 months

Community Liaison
If you have a good view of the "big picture" of vegetarianism and understand the community fabric, then we need your help framing Bay Area Vegetarians.
Responsibilities:
Promote Bay Area Vegetarians and our programs, events, and activities supporting and promoting vegetarianism to other community groups whose interests and mission overlap with ours (example - environmental organizations, social justice organizations, animal welfare and rescue organizations, etc)
Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility and perspective in looking at issues and relationships
- Can commit 1-5 hours/week for a minimum of 6 months

Outreach Coordinator
We need an outgoing and friendly individual interested to research opportunities within the San Francisco Bay Area to promote Bay Area Vegetarians, veganism, and provide education/awareness of factory farming.
Responsibilities:
- Find and coordinate leafleting, tabling and education opportunities within the SF Bay Area. Think big, think creatively, think out of the box! And think no or low budget :-)
Qualifications:
- Enthusiastic, creative, knowledgeable, and experienced with leafleting, tabling and public education on veganism and factory farming
- Self-motivated, works independently, good communication skills
- Can commit 1-5 hours/week for minimum of 6 months.

SFBAVEG List Admin
The SFBAVEG mailing list is a community resource for the local San Francisco Bay Area vegetarian and animal rights community provided by Bay Area Vegetarians. It is open to both individuals and organizations for discussion and to promote local events and projects. We have a set of posting guidelines to manage and maintain it as a useful resource to the local community.
The chief responsibility of the List Admin is to maintain SFBAVEG as a local resource for the veg and animal rights community and to insure its smooth operation on a day-to-day basis.
Responsibilities:
- Review/approve messages in pending queue from new or moderated members to determine if they meet posting guidelines.. SFBAVEG currently receives up to 250 messages per month and most do not need any review.
- Follow-up with members regarding posts that don't meet guidelines. This is a small percentage of messages.
- Assist people who need help subscribing or unsubscribing for the list, or have other general questions about the list (many of which can be addressed by our Frequently Asked Questions or FAQ).
Qualifications:
- Ability to remain patient and calm with subscribers who may be inexperienced computer users, overzealous activists or just indifferent to any agenda but their own.
- Understand and support our charter and posting guidelines.
- Email savvy and can communicate effectively via email .
- Have a Yahoo userid.
- Comfortable with using the internet and yahoogroups mailing lists.
- Minimum six months experience on SFBAVEG.
- Can commit 2-3 hours/week for minimum of 1 year.
