Cafe Colucci
I've eaten here many times and had forgotten to review it. Now after another lunch there with a veg friend I want to recommend Cafe Colucci. If they were a veg restaurant they'd get five stars from me. I have never had a meal any less than terrific, tasty, worthy of the price, complete with good service and a clean environment. Excellent veg combination, all vegan, great injera.

Amba
Very clean, well-lit interior, looks more like cafeteria, order at counter, you're served at table. Friendly helpful staff, plenty of vegan items. The "Ful" was delicious, a hummus dish with fava beans, the Israeli Salad, with finely chopped cucumber and tomato, parsley, olive oil, was bland. The condiment known as amba, a mango chutney-like sauce was terrific. Definitely not BART accessible.

Udupi Palace
My boyfriend and I really loved this place! From the other reviews, I thought we would have to deal with poor service and a undecorated restaurant, but it was the exact opposite (maybe they just redecorated?)! The service was absolutely fantastic - fast and friendly. The food was also great and we will definitely go back to try other things!

Gracias Madre
Brussel sprouts with vegan parmesan-style cheese: DELICIOSO! Yum! Chile Relleno for my entree, a big roasted chile filled with veggies and nut cheese; not batter-fried; it was OK. The rice, beans, tortillas, and other fixin's that came with it were good. My boyfriend ordered the Mole enchilada which was fantastic (I tried some!). We love the upscale ambiance and lively Mission St location.

Fresh Choice
A wide variety of salad, pasta, vegetable, soup, etc. Good and fresh; nice for dining with omni kids, family and friends. Everything is marked for vegetarian, vegan, low sodium etc. Almost every food category has a vegan option, some have many. (Before you go you can download the info for every current menu item, incl. if vegetarian or vegan. It's more than just what is offered today however.)

Loving Hut
This has become my new favorite place. Love the Eggplant Tofu, Teriyaki Kabobs and Satay Kabobs. There are actually more items than shown on their website and they now have brown rice. They have many more items than the LH in Palo Alto, completely different menus. Located between Old Navy and Borders (not in food court.) The place is always busy, which is so nice to see. Staff consistently nice.

Planet Raw
What a strange a short visit we had at Planet Raw, but it was most memorable.
Short version: Rude chief/owner pisses of new customers within 60 seconds of entering restaurant.
Long version:
We had a long drive from the San Mateo Coast up to Pleasant Hill, being so far away we had confirmed that morning that they were open ALL day (11am-8pm).
We arrived around 3pm, and as we got out of the car we joked that the place looked closed, but as we approached we could see people inside, so thought we were in luck.
I went inside to see if they were still open, and my wife waited outside and read the menu on the door.
As I entered a tall skinny blond woman, head down and putting on her coat was rushing out. She pushed by as I was asking the staff if they were still open. They explained the chef had left for the day and there was no food to be had, and I noted we'd driven a long way to try their food and was disappointed as we'd come so far.
So I turned around and followed the woman outside. My wife asked, were they open, and I said no - the chef had left for the day.
The woman could have kept on walking and we'd have been none the wiser who she was. BUT she just had to stop and turn and give us a piece of her mind, and how grateful we should be that she's working so hard for us all.
I was gob smacked; I couldn't believe how bitter she was and the tirade coming out of her mouth . All I had said to my wife is that the chef was leaving, nothing more.
She jumped in her car, slammed the door and drove off still steaming as she went. I could see the staff inside looking on, so I went back inside and asked who she was and why she was so mad. They were very apologetic and said she was the owner and was having another "bad day" and it wasn't out of the ordinary.
We never did try the food, and were encouraged to come back some other time - but why would we give such an arrogant b*tch our money.
I really don't understand why some people go into the service business. She obviously has zero respect for her customers and should think about a career change - but I suspect with her business acumen the place will fold very soon.

Herbivore
I've come here twice now and tried the grilled "chicken" sandwich and the "beef" stroganoff. I liked the chicken sandwich but the stroganoff wasn't creamy and was bascially mushroom gravy with tons of pepper added. The beef strips tasted like Morning Star frozen beef strips which happen to not taste that great. Price is ok, food is ok, but service was very good. I'll give it one more shot...

Planet Raw
Do not recommend. Did not have an opportunity to try food because chef walked out mid-day (as we were arriving). Instead of saying nothing, or apologizing for the inconvenience, she interrupted a private conversation between my husband and myself and spewed a diatribe of her personal problems with running the restaurant. Did not once apologize or acknowledge our inconvenience of not being able to have food. (Uhh, this is a restaurant??) The chef/co-owner just reeked of hostility, and also arrogance. Wait staff is friendly. Chef said to call first next time but how would that help, we live over an hour away, and are not inclined to repeat this horrible experience.

Chaat Bhavan
Excellent service; vegan definitely spoken there. After placing my order following a discussion with the waiter, he returned with a paper menu marked with all the entrees (listed on the menu as Vegetable Delights) that were already free of dairy, and of course the entire menu is meat-free. I enjoyed the Aloo Bengan, Idly Sambar, and paratha. No dosas, lots of veggie curries and appetizers.

Udupi Palace
Excellent South Indian food. Large selections. Reasonable prices. Pleasing decor. Friendly, accommodating service. They're happy to turn down the music if asked, though usually it's low. 10% discount for members of the San Francisco Vegetarian Society.

Weird Fish
I used to love this place when they had Buffalo Girls, Hell Fish Tacos, and Seitan Fish N Chips. As a Vegan, there really isn't a very compelling reason to go there much more since the the sole owner decided to remove these Vegan standouts from the menu because he supposedly got bored with the menu. I guess he doesn't really care that his vegan devoutees were not bored with those dishes.

Vegi Food
Inexpensive, informal, friendly. Plenty of seating. A large round table fits 6-8 people. Good savory flavors. Some spicy dishes. All vegan. Plenty of vegetables, not just tofu and gluten. No fake meats. Brown rice is available.
Wonton Soup has very tasty mushroom broth. Lohan Jai in Pot has an interesting variety of flavors and textures. Pot Stickers, Mu Shu Vegetables, Seaweed Soup are good.

Garden Fresh
One of my favorite places to eat in the South Bay/Peninsula. Orange beef still one of my favs and they have this new dish called Black Pepper "Chicken" that's pretty good too. Service can be a bit spotty at times and if you're with a large group plan ahead as the space is tiny.

Kokila's Kitchen
Great food and the people.are always friendly and welcoming. Lots of vegan options at the lunchtime buffet. But since the prices have gone up ($13 at the Friday buffet) they're not very competitive compared to the other great veggie places in the area, I could get two lunches at Merit Vegetarian for the same price as one here.

Weird Fish
I used to love Weird Fish. The vegan buffalo girls and seitan fish and chips made my heart sing. It was my favorite guilty pleasure. And now, without warning, it's gone, all gone. Replaced with inferior appetizers and sides that can never compare. No more amazing vegan brunch. No more deliciousness. This is one vegan who won't be returning to Weird Fish until the old menu is back.

Gracias Madre
Just give me the plain guacamole, refried beans and blue corn tortilla. That will make me happy. I don't need all that other fancy stuff. My friend said they did a great job on the guacamole. The tamale is made with a corn that is different/special. My favorite drink is the ginger beer. The decor is more fancy then I expected. All the staff members are super nice.

Symphonie
A huge variety of food choices, all vegan! We really liked everything we tried (nuggets, curries, raw desserts, drinks). Very friendly staff. Reasonable prices. I'd never been to that area, it's super close to Marin. WIll definitely be supporting this restaurant on an ongoing basis. Please try it out so that it will make it!! Vegan restaurants need your support.

Nature's Express
I had an excellent and satisfying lunch today - a Grilled Tempeh Rueben and a Chocolate Donut with coconut on top, very good imitations of the originals. I sampled a couple other dessert items which were also quite good. I'll be back soon to try some of the many other breakfast and lunch/dinner items. Definitely recommend for a quick snack or meal if you are shopping on Solano Ave.

Gracias Madre
Goodbye growing pains, hello amazing food. Sangria was refreshing and fruity. Papas al horno were perfectly seasoned. Crispy with a spicy cashew cheese sauce. Mushroom tacos were excellent- garlicky and bursting with flavor. Homemade corn tortillas were amazing. Desserts were divine. Mexican wedding cookies were crunchy, crumbly and delicious. Coconut lime cheesecake was heaven on a plate.

Gracias Madre
Nice interior. Good service. $5 cocktails! Tried the Enchiladas con Mole, which was rather spicy, but really good. The three flavors of tacos were delicious too. Will definitely pay another visit.

Great to have a vegan restaurant in this area. Unfortunately for us, during our entire meal, waitress hovered at nearby tables fussing with place settings already laid out (moving them back and forth from different tables, re-folding napkins that were already folded, straightening forks and chopsticks, etc). This really made it difficult to have a relaxed dining experience and conversation. Spring Rolls were good, Mongolian Beef unimpressive and overpriced, Red Curry with tofu was disappointing. Reviewed bill later at home and found she overcharged us $1 for the spring rolls and unexplained 0.75 charge as well. See MY BLOG for full details and photos

What fun! I love going into an "ice cream" parlor that I don't need to ask about the veganocity of every sprinkle, topping etc. Sometimes you just feel like a splurge and this is a great place for it. Afterward take a walk up the hill to the people/dog park and enjoy the great 360 degree views of the City and beyond. You may even be able to burn off the calories from the sprinkles! ;-)

Gracias Madre
I've had the tacos, tamales and enchiladas by now. They are all good, and do not resemble each other. If you want a cheap burrito/taco joint don't go here. If you want something different, like Cafe Gratitude, then give it a try. Meals do not really resemble their namesakes, like at CG, but they are good in their own way. And I love that everything on the menu and in the kitchen is vegan.

Amici's East Coast Pizzeria
Shared a large Asante pizza made with the vegan cheese, with complimentary fresh garlic, and it was excellent. Perfect size for two hungry pizza-lovers. Service was good, restaurant also very clean. Plan to return again or perhaps try the half-baked option for take-out and reheat at home ....
