Book: Case for Animal Rights by Tom Regan
The discussion will take place at Loving Hut restaurant in San Francisco, 1365 Stockton St
Last time in the fftbc Philosophy Group, we covered Chapters 1-5 in Tom Regan's book The Case for Animal Rights. The first half of the book laid the groundwork for Regan's argument for the Rights View, which we will cover this month.
We'll be discussing the material covered in Chapters 6-9.1, including:
• What is Utilitarianism? What are the varieties of Utilitarianism?
• What might make Utilitarianism unacceptable?
• Regan's Rights View. How the Rights View avoids some of the
concerns raised regarding other views covered in the book.
• Animal agriculture and the Rights View.
The Rights View can be considered largely independently of the first half of the book—so feel free to join us if you weren't part of the last discussion or haven't read the beginning of the book.
Also, based on feedback from the last group, here some suggestions for what you can read if you don't have time to make it through 160 pages:
• Read Regan's essay "The Case for Animal Rights" at
http://www.tomregan-animalrights.com/tr_essays.html OR
• If you have the book, read the Chapter Summaries. OR
• Read Chapter 8 and the Chapter Summaries. OR
• If you're feeling really ambitious, read chapters 6 through 9.1.
Regan is a charismatic speaker. Here's one of the spots you can see him talking about the Rights View:

Hope to see you there.
