Ballot Initiative:
Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act
Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act

Volunteers around the state are rallying to help farm animals and qualify the "Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act" for the September 2008 ballot. To do this, volunteers need to gather 650,000 signatures by February 2008. This would give voters the ability to vote and outlaw veal crates for baby calves, gestation crates for mother pigs and battery cages for egg laying hens in California.

California is the largest agricultural state in the U.S. It is also one of just a handful of states that allows the ballot initiative system. The ballot initiative system allows placement of issues on the ballot for a vote directly by the people. A ballot initiative is necessary because it is extremely difficult to convince the legislature to pass laws banning these confinement systems. Huge factory farming corporations have considerable influence in protecting their interests.

The California Secretary of State requires actual signatures of registered California voters. These must be collected on individual county petitions, verified by election officials and later submitted to the Secretary of State to qualify for the ballot.

This is an excellent opportunity to save millions of animals a year from extreme, gratuitous suffering on factory farms. Find out how you can help, and sign-up on their mailing list to receive periodic updates.

Community Thanksgiving Events

It has been a tradition with Bay Area Vegetarians to ask for volunteers to organize a community Thanksgiving get-together in their local area. This provides an opportunity to celebrating Thanksgiving vegan style in cities across the Bay Area. It can be Vegan Food Party (with or without a Thanksgiving theme), or maybe something more casual, like a vegan dinner at your favorite restaurant. Or maybe it's not called Thanksgiving but Turkey Liberation Day. These events can be large or small; it's entirely up to you.

If anyone is interested in hosting, please email Tammy with your ideas (date/time, restaurant dinner or VFP, etc). This is a wonderful opportunity to get to meet folks in your area AND to give something back to your local community.

Note -- at this time, please only write if you are interested in hosting an event. If you would like to attend an event, please check the event calendar for updates and hopefully there will be one in your area. If not, please think seriously about whether you could host something for Thanksgiving, or at another time this year.
