Compassionate
Living - New Series
|
Bay
Area Vegetarians (BAVeg) is sponsoring
a new Compassionate
Living Program.
This program will provide an opportunity
to examine and present different
topics related to vegetarian living,
education, and advocacy via speakers,
discussions,
and films; events and activities
will be held monthly on the 1st
Sunday at the Red Vic
Peace Center in SF.
Our new program is closely aligned
with our C-A-R-E ideals:
Community, Advocacy, Resources,
and Education. Learn more about
the Compassionate Living Program here
With the mild weather and long days,
and numerous community street fairs
and events, Spring and Summer are
the best months for outreach. So
this month's topic will be Effective
Tabling Tips & Techniques.
Sunday 5/1 - Effective Tabling
Tips & Techniques
This month Tammy and Chris,
co-founders of BAVeg, will share
strategies and know-how that have
created successful displays for both
the general and vegetarian community.
Because of their great tabling displays
(and free membership!), hundreds
of people join BAVeg every year.
For more information see our events calendar.

An
Afternoon for the Animals in SF
On Saturday, May 21st, join Thea and be a tri-advocate
for the animals! Starting at noon, there will
be a demo at KFC, followed by a vegan lunch
at 1:15 (a yummy opportunity to share food & fellowship),
leading up to a letter writing party at 3 pm.
You're welcome to join us for all events, or
just one.
See event
calendar for details of each event and
read about Sean's
tri-advocate experience.
Vegan
Beach Retreat: Fri May 20th to to Sun May 22nd
We've got a handful of spots available for
our vegan beach retreat at Half Moon Bay State
Beach. This is a wonderful opportunity for
new, aspiring, and experienced veggie folks to
connect with like-minded folks, and prepare and
enjoy delicious vegan foods. Consider it a camp-out,
cooking class, retreat and multi-day Vegan Food
Party all rolled into one event! Families/kids
are welcome.
Then join us for a special mini-workshop at
this month's San Francisco Letter
Writing Party on Sat 5/21. Nora Kramer will give a presentation
on the basics of an effective letter, and will
be available for questions as well as guidance
and
coaching to make you a better letter writer.
Nora has written lots of letters, and had lots
of them published in leading newspapers and magazines
around the country. The presentation is free,
and starts promptly at 3 pm. So please plan to
arrive by 3 pm.

Advocacy
is Rewarding
|
Our Advocacy
Rewards Program (ARP)
offers us an opportunity to show our appreciation
to our volunteers who help us with our outreach
and advocacy efforts. By participating
or organizing certain events for BAVeg, you
can earn big points in our Advocacy Rewards
Program, which translate into opportunities
to win some fun prizes.
First, thank you all
for your participation and support! Second,
congratulations to our mid-season prize winners!
For her efforts, Thea (who
organizes the SF LWP and recently
stepped up to take over the SF KFC demo)
won the big prize -- a one hour massage session.

more about all the mid-season prize winners
and what they won. For more information

April
Recap
|
A visit to Sparks
Restaurant is always a treat,
especially when followed by a hike in Armstrong
Redwoods, as we did earlier this month.
Owner and Chef Eric greeted us with news that
Sparks plans to relocate! The weekend of 5/7-8
will be their last weekend in Guerneville; we'll
keep you updated as we learn more. In SF, Feel
Real Cafe in Judah/45th just opened. All
vegan and all organic, they literally and figuratively
follow the beat of a different drummer. They
dance while preparing foods (which they call
plant-based, not vegan) and they also do not
plan to have set business hours or
answer the phone.
In mid-April, our trip to Animal
Place was
magical. From the beginning, with the fresh,
clean scent of the hay cushioning our ride in
the truck bed, to the sun softly filtered through
the trees on the single lane entrance to the
sanctuary, it was pleasant. With the animals,
it was magical. From rabbits to chickens to
pigs to goats to cows to dogs rescued from
Mexico, Animal Place is a haven for both animals
and the people who visit them. There is
really only one word that we have to say: Go.
You will not be disappointed! Thanks to Lena
for organizing this tour for 23. Check out
the photos from
our tour and visit the Animal
Place website for upcoming tour and
special event info.
Disappointingly, we heard from PETA that their
negotiations with KFC had failed. Our KFC
demos will resume. Please stick up for the chickens
and join us for a KFC
demo this month.
Note: New monthly KFC demo series starting in
Palo Alto! Thank you Candace!
Thank You
Let us all give thanks to our event organizers
and hosts for this month: Wendy, VFP at Golden
Gate Park (three years ago this month BAVeg had
their first event ever at GGP, so what a fitting
choice for this month's VFP!); Bob, Oakland
dinner; Dave, SF dinner; Alicia, Marin dinner;
Candace & Nancy, San Jose dinner; Sean, Palo
Alto dinner; Thea, Fellini brunch & SF LWP;
Sara, Berkeley LWP; Robin, Palo Alto LWP; Carol,
South Bay KFC demo; Val, Marin KFC demo.

Recipe of the Month

Black Olive Tapenade
Need a quick
and easy dip to impress family and Friends? Try
this recipe from The Mediterranean
Vegan Kitchen by Donna Klein. Warren made this for one of the
BAVeg camping trips and it was quickly gobbled
up and enjoyed by all.
1 1/3 cups pitted kalamata olives
1/4 cup drained capers
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 large cloves of garlic, chopped
1 tsp dijon mustard
1/2 tsp herbes de Provence
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Bread
Combine the olives, capers, oil, garlic, mustard,
herbes de Provence and pepper in a food processor
fitted with the metal blade. Process until a
coarse textured paste is formed. Serve at room
temperature accompanied with toasted bread.
