{"id":424,"date":"2008-07-06T15:07:04","date_gmt":"2008-07-06T20:07:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bayareaveg.org\/blog\/2008\/07\/06\/recipe-for-a-fun-4th-of-july\/"},"modified":"2008-07-16T18:40:08","modified_gmt":"2008-07-16T23:40:08","slug":"sandnsurf-2008","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bayareaveg.org\/blog\/2008\/07\/06\/sandnsurf-2008\/","title":{"rendered":"Recipe for a fun 4th of July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sand-n-Surf Vegan Food Party 2008 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Sand-n-Surf 4th of July VFP at Montara State Beach has been an annual event since 2002.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bayareaveg.org\/gallery2\/v\/sandandsurf08\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bayareaveg.org\/gallery2\/d\/8824-4\/montaravfp04.jpg\" alt=\"BAVeg friends &amp; guests at Sand-n-Surf picnic, Montara State Beach\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWhat better way to celebrate Independence Day than with a picnic at the beach.\u00a0 We officially started at 1 pm (although some of us met earlier to setup).\u00a0 It was a deceptively overcast at the beach.\u00a0 The fog layer actually kept the heat in, giving us a muggy, sauna-like atmosphere, close to 80 degrees!\u00a0 Thankfully, later in the afternoon a cool breeze developed, and kept us comfortable until the beach picnic ended after 5 pm.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->There were approximately 40 folks in attendance. So, who&#8217;s hosting the next Vegan Food Party on the coast, South Bay, North Bay, East Bay?\u00a0  \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h3>Chinese Noodle Salad<\/h3>\n<p>Due to popular request, we are sharing the recipe for the Chinese Noodle Salad created by Jennifer Raymond.  More of her delicious recipes can be found in <em>The Peaceful Palate<\/em>.\u00a0 FYI, what was brought to the VFP represents a recipe and a half (it was 12 cups of shredded cabbage)<\/p>\n<p>1 medium head green cabbage, shredded (6-8 cups)<br \/>\n1\/2 c slivered almonds, toasted<br \/>\n1\/4 cup sesame seeds, toasted<br \/>\n3-4 green onions, thinly sliced -OR- 1\/4 cup finely chopped red onion<br \/>\n1 pkg Ramen style soup<br \/>\n1 tbsp sesame oil<br \/>\n1\/3 cup seasoned rice vinegar<br \/>\n2 tbsp turbinado sugar or other sweetener<br \/>\n1\/2 tsp pepper<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bayareaveg.org\/gallery2\/v\/sandandsurf08\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bayareaveg.org\/gallery2\/d\/8737-3\/IMG_9877.JPG\" alt=\"Chinese Noodle Salad\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"10\" \/><\/a>Place the shredded cabbage in a large salad bowl<\/p>\n<p>Toast the almonds and sesame seeds by placing them in an ovenproof dish and baking at 350 degrees for 5-10 minutues, until lightly browned &amp; fragrant.\u00a0 Add to cabbage, along with the onions.<\/p>\n<p>Coarsely crush the ramen noodles and add them to the salad, uncooked, along with the packet of seasoning mix<\/p>\n<p>Mix the dressing ingredients together and pour over salad.\u00a0 Let stand 30 minutes or more before serving.\u00a0 The longer the salad stands, the softer the noodles become.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you&#8217;d like to share your 4th of July recipe, <\/strong>please post them in the comment section \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sand-n-Surf Vegan Food Party 2008 The Sand-n-Surf 4th of July VFP at Montara State Beach has been an annual event since 2002.
