Original Event Notes: Featured Hike: Exploration of San Francisco’s world-famous Golden Gate Park!
Some of the Sights We’ll See: The weather report says it will be partly cloudy with a high of 64 degrees and only a 10% chance of rain, so it should be a pleasant day to spend outdoors. In the park, we’ll enjoy these highlights:
- The Dutch Windmill (link) situated in the tranquil Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden
- The Buffalo Paddock (link), where American bison have a home on the range
- Lloyd Lake, where the Portals of the Past reveal a window into San Francisco’s rich history
- Stow Lake and Strawberry Hill (link), which feature various species of waterfowl, a waterfall and spectacular city vistas
- The de Young fine arts museum (link), which boasts an outdoor sculpture garden and a 144-foot-tall observation tower from which we will get an unparalleled 360-degree panoramic view of the park and surrounding region
- Strybing Arboretum (link), where more than 7,500 plant varieties (from redwood trees to exotic cacti) share a wildly diverse 55-acre botanical garden
After hiking five miles or so, we’ll have worked up a big appetite for some hearty vegan food, so we’ll take a short stroll through the city’s Richmond District for lunch at Golden Buddha (link) on Clement Street. (Hikers are also encouraged to bring water and vegan snacks in case they get thirsty or hungry before mealtime.) Afterward, people can decide whether to continue hiking or take a bus back to their cars or homes.
