Compassionate Living Presents

Compassionate Living Program - Paul Shapiro

Opening Cages and Opening Minds: The Campaign against the Battery Cage

A talk by Paul Shapiro, manager of the factory farming campaign at The Humane Society of the United States, founder of Compassion over Killing.

While the UK has already passed a law banning battery cages (effective 2012), the U.S. is just beginning to make our first strides against one of the cruelest standard factory farming practices. Shapiro will discuss what progress has been made in recent years to improve the plight of laying hens and how each one of us can help in the campaign to free these birds from their cages.

This is a rare Bay Area appearance by one of the leaders in the animal protection community. Before joining HSUS, Shapiro worked for 10 years as the campaigns director for Compassion over Killing, a Washington, DC-based animal advocacy organization that he founded in 1995.

Please join on Saturday 9/24 at the SF Main Library to learn more about this campaign and how you can get involved. Doors open at 10:30, presentation starts at 11 am. Following will be a lunch and rally for the chickens at Trader Joe's.

4th Anniversary Party & World Farmed Animal Day - Sun 10/2
4th Anniversary Party

It's been 4 years, about 385 events, and over 14,000 messages since Bay Area Vegetarians, aka BAVeg, started in October 2001. Whether you're new to BAVeg, or been with us since the beginning, please join us to celebrate our 4th Anniversary (or Birthday) on Sunday, Oct. 2nd at 2 pm in San Mateo. We will also be awarding and acknowledging participants in the Advocacy Rewards Program (this month is your last chance to accumulate points for the 2004-2005 season).

In honor of World Farmed Animal Day, recognized nationwide in memory of billions of animals slaughtered for food, our special guest and speaker includes lauren Ornelas, director of Viva!USA, on "Campaigning for Farmed Animals: the Whole Story" with an activist's perspective of their recent successful Whole Foods campaign, which led to improved standards for Whole Foods "meat", dairy, and egg suppliers, and CEO John Mackey going vegan.

BAVeg in the SF Chronicle
SF Chronicle

The story on BAVeg ran front page in the Peninsula "Friday" section on August 5th. Next week, the Chron reran the story (!) the following week in the San Francisco and North Bay "FRIDAY" sections. Each version was slightly different.

8/5 Chronicle - Peninsula
8/12 Chronicle - San Francisco
8/12 Chronicle - North Bay

Thank you to everyone who wrote the Chron supportive emails for such positive coverage of vegetarianism, and Bay Area Vegetarians. Here's a couple that we spotted. If your email was published, please let us know! If you'd like to pen a short thank you, contact info is included in each article at the end.

Event News & Updates
Events

Get your events here! Lisa is proposing a book club that would meet monthly to discuss various fiction and non-fiction book selections, including a vegetarian or animal rights book in the rotation quarterly. The discussion would happen over vegan food, or go for vegan food after. Interested? Read more and join the discussion as this event develops.

With our current monthly event line-up, we've had some changes happen just recently and over the last several months. Here's a recap:

Marin: Alicia's dinner is moving to the 2nd Thursday. Hannah is now hosting the KFC Cruelty protest on the 1st Friday.

SF: Thea's Friday dinner has changed to a 3rd Saturday event sandwiched between a KFC protest and Letter Writing Party (this month it involves vegan ice cream at MaggieMudd, yumm). Tammy and Chris have changed from a monthly Thurs. dinner at Shangri-La to a series that will rotate between their favorite restaurants, and those suggested to them, for a last Friday dinner.

Peninsula: Melissa is now hosting the Palo Alto Letter Writing Party (4th Saturday), and Lena is organizing the Palo Alto dinner (2nd Tuesday). Both events are at BayLeaf Cafe, presently ranked #2 by reviewers in the Ultimate Guide. Candace's KFC Cruelty protest is changing to a different store - East San Antonio Road - since the previous one closed (!)

South Bay: Nancy, who co-hosted the Vegetarian House dinner with Candace, has left to teach English in China; we wish her well. Candace will continue to host the dinner, held the 2nd Saturday monthly.

A big thanks to Hannah, Melissa, and Lena for stepping up to lead their respective events, and to Val, Nancy, Robin, Sean, Connie and Dave for their past help in hosting monthly events with Bay Area Vegetarians and the broader vegetarian community.

Please give your support and thanks to our current event hosts with your participation and assistance at our monthly events. Bring a friend... and come Be a Veg with Bay Area Vegetarians! Check the event calendar for full details on all events, and use the monthly event summary to see how they're organized across the Bay Area.

Recipe of the Month

Coconut-Cardamom Rice Pudding
Based on a reciepe from Vegan Planet by Robin Robertson

Ben brought this to our Menlo Park Vegan Food Party and it was a delicious grain-based dessert. It is yummy with or without the rose water (typically available at Middle Eastern stores). But Ben doesn't spend all his time cooking, this high school senior supports our advocacy events and is also a passionate writer.

Serves 4

2 1/2 cups cooked basmati rice
2 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut milk
1/2 cup sugar or natural sweetener
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1/2 cup coarsely chopped raw pistachios
1 1/2 tsps rose water
pinch of salt

Place the rice, coconut milk, sugar in a medium size saucepan over low heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the cardamom and salt and simmer until thick and creamy, 5 to10 minutes.

Remove from the heat and stir in the pistachios and rose water. Let cool to room temperature before serving, or cover and refrigerate to serve chilled.

If you have a favorite recipe you'd like to share, please contact us!
