I wanted to pass this information on to new vegetarians/ vegans as it is something that I wish I had known more about earlier. A nutritionist recently posted on my blog on how to calculate and meet your protein needs. The address is - http://www.goeggless.com/search/label/articles
In a nutshell, there are two equations you can use to calculate your daily protein needs based on the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA):
Females: 0.8 x body weight (expressed in kilograms) = amount of protein in grams
Males: 1.0 x body weight (expressed in kilograms) = amount of protein in grams
There are multiple websites that let you know what the protein content is for various foods, including the USDA's website. There are some examples on goeggless.com along with a sample menu. _________________ www.goeggless.com

Hi, Sarah.
After reading many of Dr. McDougall's books, I have the idea that the recommended amount of daily protein, per the US Recommended Dietary Allowances, is much more than we actually need. According to Dr. McDougall, if we just eat sufficient healthy foods, such as brown rice and vegetables, we'll get plenty of protein.
Joel Fuhrman (Eat to Live) agrees and cites the recommendation of the World Health Organization, which recommends 5 per cent of calories from protein although the actual minimum requirement may be even lower. On a daily 1500 calorie diet, sufficient for many women, the WHO recommended amount would be less than 20 grams daily.

Good to know! Either way, we need a lot less protein than people will sometimes think and that is refreshing! I will check out that book. Thanks! _________________ www.goeggless.com
