Hi folks
I would like to compile a good list of books on topics related to vegetarianism, vegan nutrition & cooking, as well as animal rights.
Please let me know what books that you've found useful or influential, and -- if possible -- why.
Thanks a bunch!

Tammy - I'm reading Food Politics right now (Marion Nestle). Great read! Doesn't focus on vegetarianism, but she gives the lowdown on the influence of government and food industry on our eating habits. Too bad vegetables and fruits don't have big advertising budgets, eh?

Tammy, It's difficult to choose from many hundreds of animal rights books, vegan living books, cookbooks, vegan philosophy books, etc. I must have read and/or own more than a couple hundred. Here are just a few I can think of offhand:
• Diet For A New America by John Robbins:
I first learned about veganism and it got me to change from lacto-ovo vegetarian to vegan. Before that I had honestly not considered the suffering of animals that are exploited for dairy and egg products. And I did not know most of the environmental information.
• The Vegetarian Sourcebook by Joanne Stepaniak
and
• Being Vegan by Joanne Stepaniak
and
• Becoming Vegan by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina:
great support for both established vegans and those expressing interest, and have found they’ve helped aspiring vegans make the plunge
• The Peaceful Palate by Jennifer Raymond
and
• How It All Vegan by Tanya Barnard & Sarah Kramer:
vegan cookbooks with easy recipes that new vegans find user friendly and that almost everyone seem to find delicious
• the 2 Now and Zen restaurant cookbooks, the 2 Millennium restaurant cookbooks, the Candle Café cookbook, Native Foods Restaurant Cookbook, The Angelica Home Kitchen, etc. cookbooks from vegan restaurants:
because if/when they close I feel as though the food will still be available, and people who can’t make it to the restaurants/locales or can’t afford a restaurant meal can still sample their foods
• The Case for Animal Rights by Tom Regan:
he's very bright and makes cogent arguments, and was one of my favorite speakers at an American Vegan Society convention that I attended
• Vegan Passport (booklet):
for those who get to travel, when in countries with languages foreign to them, it provides an easy way to ask for a vegan meal/vegan food
I know there are also MANY more that have meant a lot to me.
But I hope this is of some help. Lisa |

| Had to leave out so many but one more I'd really like to mention is: Living Among Meat Eaters by Carol Adams, which is a great support to vegans and can be eye-opening to the omnivores in their lives. |

I love Conscious Eating along with Spiritual Nutrition and the Rainbow diet both by Gabriel Cousens..probably the worlds foremost authority on vegan and raw nutrition! His website is www.treeoflife.nu
I also love The Essene Gospel of Peace.....a vegetarian classic!
Survival Into the 21st Century by Viktoras Kulvinksas among many many others!!!
