Tainted pet food?

I am working on an article regarding the recent string of tainted food for dogs and cats, which led to hundreds of deaths. I am interested in hearing from anyone who has:

a) a personal story about this tragedy (if you don't mind being quoted in print)
b) any suggestions -- especially vegan recipes -- for feeding your companion animal(s)
c) advice for animal guardians on where to buy food and what kind is recommended
