Bunnies in Need

As a vegan and animal advocate, I was looking for a way to become more directly involved in helping animals. After some searching online I discovered the SF/Marin chapter of the House Rabbit Society. I signed up to foster bunnies in need, and am now helping care for two beautiful New Zealand white rabbits, Buddy Boy and Laxmi. I had never lived with rabbits before -- I’d always been more of a cat person -- but my wife and I agree that bunnies are the perfect companion animals. They are affectionate, litterbox trained and have great personalities.

I would urge anyone in the Bay Area looking for a way to become more engaged in helping animals to visit www.saveabunny.com. Whether you want to save a life by adopting a rabbit, or would like to foster one or more, this is extremely rewarding -- for both you and the lucky bunny!

I'm happy to see your post, Mark. Rabbits are indeed wonderful companions. I adopted my first pair in March and I am continually fascinated by them and their antics. In fact, I also enjoy looking at photos of other people's bunnies (bunny p0rn, haha) and I "know" your Laxmi from her photo on the shelter's website.

Sadly, there is a real bunny crisis in the Bay Area. The shelters are filled to overflowing. There is no difference between the dear bunnies who share our homes, and the less fortunate bunnies who are farmed for you-know-what. As you know, the big, gentle white bunnies like Laxmi are, ironically, the most common victims of labs and farms. Restaurants don't use wild cottontails (not like that'd be ok!), they use domesticated buns. Sickening.

On a brighter note, rabbits are great vegan housemates! They love hay and salads and the occasional fruit treat. They make you laugh when they run around, and they make you relaxed when they settle down to be petted. I never thought I'd have them, and now I can't imagine being without them.

I'm glad to hear two more bunnies have a good home, Candace.

It is shameful that people buy bunnies from pet stores and breeders; that only perpetuates the problem, and there are so many rabbits in shelters just waiting to be adopted. These gentle, loving animals are such a joy to live with.

I am thankful for people like you and those working at the House Rabbit Society.

Seems like a growing number of people have rabbits as companions. And, as rabbits are natural vegetarians, they are great housemates for human vegetarians.

I was quite shocked to find that there are local restaurants that serve rabbits on the menu .. of course, serving any animal is awful, but rabbits are the one animal that I think even carnivores would see as a "pet" and have sympathies against eating.

But maybe not, since I know rabbits have also been used for their fur without much outcry from the general non-veg public.
