Gracias Madre I was impressed by the ambiance, but the food could use some work. I love being able to order anything with no concern, but the menu was a little short and overpriced. The refried beans, brown rice and tortillas were PERFECT. The chile rellanos was bland and needed spice. The cheese was used too sparingly, and blander than the cheeses at Gratitude. No hot salsa? C'mon! 4 stars 2010-01-04
Ritual Coffee Roasters They usually have a wide variety of people's donuts and a couple of vegan cake/bread or cookie options. Also, they have the BEST coffee in the city. 4 stars 2007-10-15
Minako Organic Japanese Cuisine AMAZING sushi. Every roll we've tried has been great but Green River, their spicy vegan unagi roll, is probably my favorite maki roll anywhere. I also recommend the fried yam and the eggplant. In addition the service is great, and we've had a great time every time we've dined here. 5 stars 2007-08-06
Beach Burrito An OK burrito place with a few vegan options- good for a quick bite if you are in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't go out of my way. 3 stars 2007-05-30
Golden Lotus It's no Golden Era, (or Golden Era 2 for that matter) but a great place to go in downtown Oakland for vegans. I agree that the service can be indifferent and are not the most attentive staff I have encountered, but all in all a good place for the price. 3.5 stars 2007-05-30
New Ganges I do NOT recommend this restaurant under any circumstance. It's not the food, the food is fine. It's the owner. Pushy, in your face, overbearing-call him what you will, I think he may have some kind of personality disorder.Anyway he's over the top, and he is very difficult to reason with. If you or anyone you know is considering opening a veg Indian place in SF- PLEASE DO IT! We'll love you for it 0 stars 2007-05-08
Pizza Plaza The pizza could be better, but I love them for taking the chance and going all veg. Decent food, friendly staff and they deliver. I hope they seriously consider opening a store in SF.... 4 stars 2007-05-08
Ananda Fuara Nice relaxing spot. I wouldn't say they have a lot of vegan options, but the few offerings they do have are good. I usually go for the veggie burger, or call ahead to see what is on the the daily special menu which includes an entree (usually vegan), soup, salads, a curry and gelato . I find the curries to be a little bland, but overall a good place to eat. 4 stars 2007-05-07
Hanabi Sushi Decent veg friendly sushi. Try the Shinya roll- (avocado, tofu, ginger and wasabi) also they have a good shiitake roll and serve it all with a tasty tofu salad. As with all non vegetarian sushi places the miso soup has fish powder in it. Also their tempura has egg in it. Bummer. 3 stars 2007-04-27
Azteca Cheap and vegan friendly, this taqueria has a great fresh salsa bar and the best refried black beans in the city! Also, they will substitute fresh avocado for guacamole at no extra charge. The catch is, like most taquerias, they do grill meat and the smell can get overwhelming especially when they are busy 4 stars 2007-04-27
Mekong I love this place- try the Curry Puffs or the "Chicken" Satay as an appetizer. Don't forget to tell the owner/staff you are vegan and ask for daily specials. Everything they have ever recommended me has been amazing! 5 stars 2007-04-27
Medicine Eatstation Good food, though a little pricey. Our waiter was rude, but I can't comment on the entire staff as I have only eaten there once, and am not sure I'll ever return. I prefer CHA YA for a relatively cheap vegan sushi lunch, but the best Japanese in town is the ultra veg friendly MINAKO. 3 stars 2007-04-25
Bok Choy Garden New ownership, in my oppinion has been a huge improvement for Bok Choy. The food is saucier and much more flavorful, and the new owner (the rest of the staff as well) is very friendly and attentive. Their mu shu is sublime! 4 stars 2007-04-23
Papalote They have Soyrizo and the tofu mole is amazing. Also on the menu are a few different vegetable burritos and tacos. No salsa bar, but the salsa they give out is so good I don't mind. 4.5 stars 2007-02-21
Shangri-La My favorite place in the city to go for lunch. Pickled vegetables, soup of the day and an entree served with a spring roll and brown rice for under 10$(including tip!). Also of note is the B3 vege lamb with dioscoria. Delicious! 5 stars 2007-02-19
