Weird Fish I used to love Weird Fish. The vegan buffalo girls and seitan fish and chips made my heart sing. It was my favorite guilty pleasure. And now, without warning, it's gone, all gone. Replaced with inferior appetizers and sides that can never compare. No more amazing vegan brunch. No more deliciousness. This is one vegan who won't be returning to Weird Fish until the old menu is back. 0 stars 2010-01-29
Gracias Madre Goodbye growing pains, hello amazing food. Sangria was refreshing and fruity. Papas al horno were perfectly seasoned. Crispy with a spicy cashew cheese sauce. Mushroom tacos were excellent- garlicky and bursting with flavor. Homemade corn tortillas were amazing. Desserts were divine. Mexican wedding cookies were crunchy, crumbly and delicious. Coconut lime cheesecake was heaven on a plate. 5 stars 2010-01-22
Cafe Gratitude I love, love, love the I am Cool Milkshake. Quinoa bowl is phenomenal (order with beans and cashew cheese). Desserts are heavenly: coconut cream pie, key lime pie, brazil nut ice creams. Food is a bit pricey, but worth it. The menu is inventive (amazing what you can do raw) and ingredients are always fresh. A nice break from processed food. Always feel great after a meal at Cafe Gratitude. 4.5 stars 2009-12-30
Enjoy Vegetarian Started with the BBQ Pork, nice flavor, but a bit too soggy/squishy. Chow Mein had about 5x the bean sprouts as noodles. Veggie tri-spice chicken was tasty, most flavorful dish we had. Lemon chicken had a thick coating of lemon slime (not appealing). Overall, food could have used more flavor/spices. Very bright inside, lacking in ambiance. 3 stars 2009-12-30
Burma Super Star The food at Burma Superstar is amazing. I ate and loved things I would never imagine eating (vegan of course). I highly recommend the tea leaf salad (mixed at your table). The vegetarian samusa soup is the best soup I have ever had. Chunks of samusas, falafels, lentils, veggies and spices. Pea shoots were phenomenal. Highly recommended, but get there early as it gets packed with long waits. 5 stars 2009-06-22
Millennium Went to Millennium for my birthday last week and was very impressed, as usual. They were offering the Summer Solstice menu, which consisted of four amazing and luxurious courses. I had the tamale entree and it was incredible. The dessert was a coconut cream and blueberry compote parfait, which melts in your mouth. Cucumber margarita was a surprisingly tasty treat. 5 stars 2009-06-22
The Raven\'s Went to the Stanford Inn this weekend and had a few meals at Raven's. The dinners were amazing. Fresh organic produce from their gardens. Innovative creations. All dinner selections are vegan. Most breakfast items are vegan, with a few vegetarian choices. I loved their breakfast waffle with fresh berry compote. Best waffle I've ever had! Can't wait to go back and use my Raven's cookbook! 5 stars 2009-06-22
The Stanford Inn Celebrated my birthday with a romantic weekend at the Stanford Inn. Breathtaking views from our balcony. Lovely walks through the gardens. Cozy, natural rooms, each with a fireplace. Special treats (cookies, candies) left in your room each day. Inn staff was very friendly. 24-hour access to their pool and hot tub. Got to spend some time with a few Llamas. Short walk to Mendocino village. 5 stars 2009-06-22
Lanesplitter Pizza & Pub Vegan calzone is huge (and delicious), it definitely feeds two. Tons of fresh gooey vegan ricotta and sauce. My only wish was that it had more veggies, but will request a few add-ins next time. 4 stars 2009-06-22
Jay's Cheesesteak Large selection of seitan sandwiches. I like the bell pepper and mushroom. If vegan, need to request no mayo and no cheese. Unfortunately, they don't have vegenaise or soy cheese, but keeping my fingers crossed that someday they will. Great sandwich if you're really hungry, very filling. 3.5 stars 2009-06-22
Avatar's Punjabi Burrito What a neat concept. They don't use ghee in any of their items, but if vegan, request no yogurt. I had a tasty concoction of spinach, collard greens and tofu over basmati rice with sides of chutney and chickpeas. Food is either served in a whole wheat wrap (sort of like naan) or on a metal plate. There are a few indoor as well as outdoor tables. Couple of veggie options. Great spicy papadum. 4 stars 2009-06-22
Dosa Mysore Masala Dosa was delicious. Waitstaff is really helpful in identifying which items are vegan (or can be made vegan). They have a large selection of vegan options. Only complaint is that they serve meat (so four stars instead of 5). 4 stars 2009-06-22
Ike's Great selection of vegan sandwiches (any of their sandwiches can be made vegan). Only a few tables outside (and no space inside), so either go there before the lunch rush or take it to go. The vegan meatball sandwich is AMAZING. Plus, you get a vegan lollipop with every sandwich :) 4 stars 2009-06-22
Little Chihuahua Recently discovered this little gem. They have several vegetarian and vegan options. They identify which beans are vegetarian (whole black beans and refried black beans). Rice is vegetarian. For burrito filings, they have a chili verde tofu (amazing), grilled veggies or wild mushrooms. Selection of tortillas. You can even order a "baby burrito" when you want something smaller. Not 100% veg*n 4 stars 2009-06-22
Garden Fresh Not a huge fan of their faux chicken dishes (curry chicken or hunan shredded chicken). I like the soft roll (rolled tofu skin with veggies in a brown sauce). 3.5 stars 2008-06-07
Manzanita Restaurant This was my first macrobiotic experience and I really enjoyed it. The vegetables were very tasty and it was a refreshing healthy meal. It was nice to eat a vegan/organic meal that was based on whole foods, not processed/mock meats. I tried some veggies that I wouldn't ordinarily eat and was quite surprised to enjoy them. Even the cookies (made without refined flours or sugars) were great. 4 stars 2007-07-23
Pizza Plaza I wasn't a huge fan of Pizza Plaza. I've tried it twice and haven't been impressed either time. There's something off about the sauce, not enough cheese and it seemed like the spices were just kind of thrown on top after the pizza had already been cooked. The veggie chicken resembles sausage more than chicken, there's an odd seasoning to it. I'm all for vegan pizza, but 2 stars for quality. 2 stars 2007-07-23
Pancho Villa Taqueria Great lunch take out spot for those working in the San Mateo area. Tofu burrito is really good. Very authentic tasting...nice and salty. No lard or animal stock used in their beans. Fast and fresh. Long lines during lunch time. Big meat grill, which is a turnoff, but if you get take out, you're in and out. Great juice bar! 4.5 stars 2007-02-06
Love N Haight Love the name. Awesome veggie chicken steak sandwich. Make sure to say no mayo (not vegan). 4.5 stars 2007-02-06
Golden Era Good food, but not the greatest area to be walking around at night. I really liked their pan fried vegetable chowfun and tay-ho rolls. Service isn't that great, servers weren't attentive. 3.5 stars 2007-01-29
Animal Place I've been a volunteer at Animal Place for about 7 months now. It is my favorite place to be. In the Spring, they have tours at least twice a month for visitors who wish to meet the sanctuary residents. Volunteer Work Parties (with vegan potlucks) are also held twice a month. The staff is wonderful. I make the trek from San Jose just about every weekend! 5 stars 2007-01-29
MaggieMudd Could there be anything more wonderful than Maggie Mudd? I think not. So many favorites: Dubliner (with chocolate jimmies), Mint Cookie Swirl, Island Jitters and fresh waffle cones (made seconds before you eat them). Love that they sell Mudslinger Freestyle at Rainbow. Nonveg friends couldn't tell the difference between the soy ice creams and dairy ice cream. Well worth the trip up to SF! 5 stars 2007-01-29
Saturn Cafe Went with visiting omnivore family. They loved it, my vegan breakfast was ok. Way too much onion in the tofu scramble. Their garlic fries are awesome. Funky interior. Very close to downtown Santa Cruz. Love that they serve Tang. Wouldn't go again for brunch, but would go again for garlic fries and Tang :) 3.5 stars 2007-01-29
Medicine New-Shojin Eatstation I definitely recommend making a reservation. Very trendy interior. Long rows of tables with benches (very similar to Wagamama in the UK). I had the clarity foundation set, which was excellent. Their savory peanut sauce is to die for. Great selection of hot and cold teas. Very loud atmosphere and not a lot of privacy, but great for lunch or an after work dinner. Excellent service. 4.5 stars 2007-01-29
Good Karma Tiny little hole in the wall that you would miss if you didn't know it was there, but the food is great. Cold deli case with assorted items that they re-heat in the microwave. They have these delicious doughy things stuffed with minced veggies that are fantastic. Teriyaki veggie chicken is really good. 4.5 stars 2006-11-28
Herbivore Vegan french toast and tempeh BLTs...what more could you ask for? The food at Herbivore is incredible. Sometimes the service is a bit slow. The only dishes I'm not a fan of are the tofu scrambles. Everything else has been fantastic! 5 stars 2006-11-16
New World Vegan I went to New World a few weeks ago with a friend, who really liked the place. We ordered soup and two entrees. Both of us were extremely dissatisfied with the food. The soup tasted like water. We had an eggplant dish and the eggplant could not have been any more bland, it tasted like an overboiled potato. The final item we tried was not any better, it was a clay pot dish, awful. 0 stars 2006-11-16
The Happy Bamboo Love Happy Bamboo...the veggie chicken drumsticks are incredible (and addictive). All of the food is very flavorful and reasonably priced. The owner is incredibly nice. My other favorite is the Garlic Veggie Chicken. Tofu with vegetables is also very good. They even have vegan cake (from Black China) for dessert. 5 stars 2006-11-16
Fellini Huge vegan selection, but some of the items can be a bit bland. With a little salt and pepper, the vegan cheese pizzas are great. The food could definitely use more seasoning. 3.5 stars 2006-11-16
Vegetarian Gourmet The food at Vegetarian Gourmet is fantastic. Large selection of veggie dishes as well as faux meats and noodle staples. Great lunch specials for quick lunches. Fav Dish: Tofu Rolls...mmmm 5 stars 2006-06-19
