Taj Grill Opened up earlier this year. Recent group dinner tried 6 different curries. All delicious. Chana saag my favorite. The only thing I didn't like was the pakora; it lacked filling and flavor. 4 stars 2014-11-14
Saina I've been here four or five times now, both lunch and dinner, and enjoyed all of my food (5 stars). Food is delicious, service is good, prices are reasonable, and best of all -- no beings were harmed in the making. Note - may not be open despite posted hours. Call in advance or you could be standing outside hungry (minus 2 stars) 3 stars 2014-11-07
The Veggie Grill Have eaten here several times now. Enjoyed it each time. Still have lots more items on the menu to try. Service has also been friendly and quick. Favorites: Crispy Cauliflower, Crispy Chick'n Plate (yummy caulimashed potatoes)...miss the onion rings. 5 stars 2014-11-05
Blossom Vegan I have been here twice now and loved it. Only problem is the food was quickly gone. Need to go back for more. Soon. 5 stars 2014-10-26
Small World Cafe The falafel pita is my favorite. It's really flavorful and packed full of fresh veggies. I get it every time I order. I keep thinking I should try something new but this is already so good, how can anything else be better?? 4 stars 2014-09-09
Melted My first-time ever to have waffle sandwiches! Yummy. The stamper (artichoke heart pesto sandwich with sundried tomatoes) is my favorite. You can also be creative and order custom vegan sandwiches, too. 4 stars 2014-08-17
Republic of V Cute store! Next time Iím in the area, Iíll definitely plan ahead so I can pick up some stuff from their frozen section (which my local Whole Foods doesnít carry!) 5 stars 2014-02-25
Veggie Today Will definitely return anytime I am in the area! Friendly service, good food, reasonable prices, good-sized portions. Most of the items on the menu are vegan, except for the chow mein noodles (sigh). Otherwise, highly recommend! Similar food to the Golden Lotus/Era restaurants. 4.5 stars 2013-01-13
Vegan Paradice I had the house-made "meaty" burger, with grilled onions, delightfully saucy, followed by the soft serve vanilla/carob swirl topped with their carob sauce and nuts and crumbled carob chip cookie (they were sold-out of almond roca). Delicious, and very happily received. FYI, burgers served on disposable paper plates and soft serve came in styrofoam cups. Super to have this nearly vegan restaurant in Fairfield!! Small half-star deducted because: 1) the sliced bread didn't really hold up real well and became messy. 2) Honey isn't vegan, and for a place named "Vegan Paradice", it's a crying-out-loud shame that they don't use vegan buns and pizza dough. If this concerns you, be sure to double-check, as I didn't see this noted on their menu or signage in the store. 4.5 stars 2013-01-13
Vegi Food Friendly service, quick, simple foods - the potstickers (made in-house) are my favorite item on the menu. 4 stars 2012-05-29
Pepples Donuts Peeple's donuts are a tad on the pricey side, but hugely yummy. Treat yourself... and enjoy a great view of the Bay at the same time. 4 stars 2012-03-04
Vaishnu Express Cafe Thrilled to see a veg restaurant in this corner of the north bay. Although decor is sparse, Vaishnu focuses on what's most important: the food. Tried two of the curries and the samosas. Everything was reasonably priced, good-sized portions. We enjoyed everything. In fact, the samosas are huge, and a deal at only 0.75 each. Looking forward to returning and trying more. Note, it is fast food so everything is served on disposable paper trays. 4.5 stars 2012-03-04
Boo Koo I like the concept -- base dishes are all vegan, and non-vegans can then add what they want. But I didn't like what I picked (Pad Thai). It was one of the worst dishes I've ever eaten at a restaurant. I was so disappointed by this, I had to console myself with a vegan donut afterwards from Whole Foods. 1 stars 2011-03-15
Green Papaya I ate there when they said they were "all vegan". I thought it was only okay so I didn't post a review. Now I've learned that customers have been telling them that their dishes with "shrimp paste" are not vegetarian, but they continue to use the sauce and tell people the dishes are vegetarian. When I called them yesterday, they said those dishes (with shrimp paste) are still vegetarian but not vegan. I also told them those curry dishes using the sauce with shrimp paste are not vegetarian, and to remove the dishes from their menu, if they wish to remain as a vegetarian restaurant. No apparent active owner/management. Sigh....... 0 stars 2011-03-01
Maoz Vegetarian My first visit was good. Disappointed that they didn't have the wraps like Chick-o-Peas, just pita. So I opted for Belgian fries and salad bowl (5 falafel balls with my selections from a mostly vegan salad bar toppings with about 3 different vegan sauce choices). Would probably enjoy the salad more when the weather is warmer. 4 stars 2010-12-23
No Worries Tried them on their grand opening night. Food & service overall good. Nearly all the offerings had faux meats though (in keeping with traditional Filipino cuisine). Nice addition to the veg scene for the Bay Area, check 'em out. 4 stars 2010-11-14
Great Vegi Land Chef/owner opened up 30 min early to serve us, very friendly service. We asked for a recommendation and it was delicious - Sizzling Tofu (with vegetables). The steamed dumplings also yummy. Would definitely return if in the area. 4.5 stars 2010-09-27
Millennium This upscale all-vegan dining establishment has really refined the concept of vegan dining to a new high. Well-thought out and deliciously executed. Impeccable service, too. Can be very noisy and some tables are too close. 4.5 stars 2010-08-29
Amici's East Coast Pizzeria Have eaten the vegan pizza here a couple of times. Convenient location, friendly service .. love that they have a vegan pizza with Daiya vegan cheese on the menu, and no cost to add the Daiya vegan cheese to ANY of their pizzas. 4 stars 2010-08-23
Garden Fresh This is my first time at their Palo Alto restaurant, but have been to the Mtn View one dozens of times. PA is like a reincarnation of the Mtn View restaurant but the decor is much nicer. If you enjoy fried foods, I recommend the Scallion Pancakes. Two of us shared preceding, plus Black Pepper Veggie Chicken, brown rice, and total with tax and tip was $24. We didn't gormandize as we usually do so preceding plus the complimentary corn and tofu soup was a lovely dinner. 4 stars 2010-08-22
Saturn Cafe I was there on their opening day. While it is an enjoyable place to hang out, with awesome service (even on the first day), the sad truth is that there are limited options for vegans. That said, having been to Santa Cruz location sporadically over several years, the garlic fries and the vegan shakes remain wonderful choices, even at this new Berkeley location. 3.5 stars 2010-07-22
Chick-O-Peas - The Falafel Place I was too lazy to make my own falafel so I ordered the Lebanese Falafel, which included falafael, roasted eggplant and lebanese slaw wrapped in a lavash. It was yummy and well-seasoned, a bit spicy. Along with the wrap, I shared a soup and it was the perfect satisfying dinner. I look forward to returning the next time I'm in the area. Reasonably priced, too. 4.5 stars 2010-06-22
Black China Bakery I love their vegan desserts. My non-vegan family also love their vegan desserts, and often request we bring them to family gatherings. Their cakes are moist and light, and the frosting is just perfect. All the flavors are great, but the mocha cake has got to be my favorite. 4.5 stars 2010-06-22
Thai Idea Vegetarian I loved everything about my first visit here -- the menu which was nearly all vegan or could be made vegan, the delicious food, it's artful presentation, the friendly & attentive service, the beautiful decor, easy parking, reasonable prices .. the only disappointment was only one dessert choice for vegans (but it is a delicious one - mango sticky rice). See my BLOG POST (click here) for more details & photos! 5 stars 2010-04-30
Tony Tutto Pizza Tried three of their vegan pizzas - all are delicious! Especially loved the thin, crisp crust which had just the right amount of toppings. Did not miss the heaviness of vegan cheese. Note, the chili flakes and chili oil used in their pizzas give them a bit of a kick. I loved the fresh arugula on the "Garden of Love Light" pizza. Would definitely return if in the area. 4.5 stars 2010-04-25
Cafe Gratitude I really enjoyed the food on a recent visit, particularly the raw ice cream with chocolate sauce. Shared the chard-leaf spring rolls with thai dipping sauce, pesto pizza, & warm tamales -- all very yummy. Very tight seating and close proximity to others diminished my enjoyment of the overall experience. 4.5 stars 2010-03-16
Planet Raw Do not recommend. Did not have an opportunity to try food because chef walked out mid-day (as we were arriving). Instead of saying nothing, or apologizing for the inconvenience, she interrupted a private conversation between my husband and myself and spewed a diatribe of her personal problems with running the restaurant. Did not once apologize or acknowledge our inconvenience of not being able to have food. (Uhh, this is a restaurant??) The chef/co-owner just reeked of hostility, and also arrogance. Wait staff is friendly. Chef said to call first next time but how would that help, we live over an hour away, and are not inclined to repeat this horrible experience. 0 stars 2010-02-15
Symphonie Great to have a vegan restaurant in this area. Unfortunately for us, during our entire meal, waitress hovered at nearby tables fussing with place settings already laid out (moving them back and forth from different tables, re-folding napkins that were already folded, straightening forks and chopsticks, etc). This really made it difficult to have a relaxed dining experience and conversation. Spring Rolls were good, Mongolian Beef unimpressive and overpriced, Red Curry with tofu was disappointing. Reviewed bill later at home and found she overcharged us $1 for the spring rolls and unexplained 0.75 charge as well. See MY BLOG for full details and photos 3 stars 2010-01-18
Amici's East Coast Pizzeria Shared a large Asante pizza made with the vegan cheese, with complimentary fresh garlic, and it was excellent. Perfect size for two hungry pizza-lovers. Service was good, restaurant also very clean. Plan to return again or perhaps try the half-baked option for take-out and reheat at home .... 4.5 stars 2010-01-17
Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op Large natural foods store, good selection of veg & vegan items in their deli (clearly marked). I enjoyed what I selected. Nice eating area inside. 4 stars 2010-01-12
Souley Vegan Vegan soul food - yummy! Had the potato salad, macaroni and cheese, bbq tofu, black eyed peas and collard greens. Potato salad and macaroni and cheese are awesome. BBQ tofu was disappointing. Overall, enjoyed it, would return again if in the area. 4.5 stars 2009-11-15
Bobby Gís Pizzeria Wonderful vegan pizza available! Thoroughly enjoyed the flexibility to order vegan pizza by the slice, and to have different toppings on each slice. The three slices were hugely filling, ample toppings and right amount of tomato sauce/tofu ricotta cheese. Easy transit, too - 1 block from BART. See my longer review & photos on my blog 4.5 stars 2009-06-24
Donna's Tamales I highly recommend the "vegan burrito". It's has a tahini-based sauce with veggies and beans. Have been enjoying it for several years (my previous review was dated 2004). There's other vegan items on the menu but I always order this. Currently $5.50 5 stars 2009-06-14
Fellini In past (2008), have really liked their vegan pizzas. Menu has since downsized, and not as many vegan pizzas available, but they're still offered. Restaurant has also changed owners. Had the tofu scramble on a recent visit (May 2009) - would not order again or recommend. Overall, nice ambiance, friendly service, easy access public transit. 3.5 stars 2009-05-17
Smart Alec's Intelligent Food Just wandered in accidentally. Enjoyed the air baked fries topped with fresh garlic. They were cheap and delicious. Ultra-quick service, too. 3.5 stars 2009-05-17
Merit Vegetarian Vietnamese crepes are excellent; lemongrass tofu very rich, complex flavorings; sesame eggplant tofu also excellent. Spring rolls with peanut sauce yummy! My favorite place for vegan dining in the South Bay (see my blog for photos.) 5 stars 2009-04-29
Herbivore Love that everything here is vegan. Food is generally good, although sometimes it's just okay. Service or rather the lack of it can be an issue. Macaroni or potato salad instead of fries is welcome addition (typically weekday circa 5 pm they are serving reheated fries). Generally good: zaatar, spring rolls, breakfast burrito, portabello mushroom sandwich. Avoid the macaroni & cheese (it's pasta with a orange-colored sauce, not the traditional casserole & not very good.) Bundle up warm if you're eating in the winter - door doesn't close well. Heard they have space heaters but there weren't any when I was there last week and both staff and other customers were leaving the door open. I rarely dine here in the winter because that annoyance ruins the enjoyment of eating out. 3.5 stars 2009-01-24
Dosa Shared 2 appetizers and 3 entrees - papadom, pakora, Paper Masala were YUMM. -- Since this review was originally written, all veg restaurant, Udupi now on same block and its food is excellent. I prefer eating & supporting vegetarian restaurants, so I'll be getting my dosas at Udupi. 4 stars 2009-01-24
Udupi Palace Overall, enjoyable dining experience. Waiter was knowledgeable about pointing out vegan items, service is good, food was delivered quickly. Favorites include the samosa & spring dosa, and I tried my first Uthappam. All have been delicious, and bonus -- it's warm in the winter! (too many SF restaurants have no heating) Currently my favorite place to dine in SF. 4.5 stars 2009-01-03
Loving Hut Ordered 4 dishes to share family style. Appetizer combo of several different soy proteins was overpriced at $10 (the picture on the menu looks better than the actual dish) and underwhelming in taste. Deluxe lemongrass dish was delicious (would definitely order this again); veggie combo and the sweet & sour were okay. The latter was mostly veggies, few soy protein nuggets. Service okay but scarce. 3 stars 2008-11-29
Judahlicious Nice, clean interior. People friendly, excellent service. Enjoyed the mahendra soup (seasoned & tasty curry soup with cauliflower, green lentil, sweet potato, russet potato with chopped kale on top). Generous half-serving was a reasonable $5. Looking forward to return. 4.5 stars 2008-10-12
Golden Era Generally I like the food at Golden Era (I'm a fan of the faux meats), but the indifference/lack of service by wait staff is so frustrating and a big spoiler for me for an enjoyable meal. But if you don't mind not having water while you eat or constantly asking/reminding wait staff, you'll be okay. Recently, we picked a specific dish because it was described as having chinese broccoli and mushrooms. It arrived with regular broccoli and the equivalent of 1 mushroom cut into 4 small pieces. 3 stars 2008-09-22
New World Vegan I was really enjoying New World (typically there once a month) until my visit earlier this month... they served rice that tasted like I always imagined cardboard would. It was awful. How can an asian restaurant ruin rice?! I was with friends so didn't want to hassle with sending it back. Aside from that isolated experience, typically I enjoy the food, well-seasoned. Usually good sized portions. 4 stars 2008-09-21
Fragrance Land Great place for large group dinner with the round tables. 6 people shared 2 appetizers, 6 entrees and was less than $13.50, tax/tip included! Portion sizes are good, friendly service, nice decor, too. I enjoyed all the dishes, particularly the scallion pancakes, salt & pepper "fish" and the "chicken" curry. A small number of items have eggs or dairy, and are noted on menu. Would return again. 5 stars 2008-09-14
Peace, Love & Cupcakes Tried 5 flavors and they were all very delicious. I was hesitant at first about the Chai cupcake. The flavor was complex but unusual to me .. at first I wasn't sure, then the 2nd time I really liked it. Really enjoyed the lemon - both for the taste and the decorations. And they're all vegan! How awesome! 4.5 stars 2008-09-08
Cha-Ya I love knowing everything is vegan and there's no animal particles hidden in the food or shared cutting boards/knives. I recommend their sushi, seaweed salad, and tempura. Note - can be pricey. Unfortunately the only downside is the cost ... typically costs me ~$20 for dinner. Weekend lunch is great value - most of the same items from the dinner menu, and a bit cheaper! On my last two visits, service is still good but not stellar when compared to previous experiences (food takes longer to arrive or entree forgotten so they gave it to me for free) 4 stars 2008-09-07
The Breakroom Cafe Finally got to try it - loved my vegan selections -- warm sandwich ($8 for sandwich alone), potato salad, double-layer black china mocha cake (worth it for this alone!) -- wonderful place for a casual meal and conversation with friends. It is a tad pricey but I enjoyed it. Would definitely return. 4.5 stars 2008-07-19
Sugar Beat Sweets Had their cupcake and a cookie at Usual Suspects Cafe. Really enjoyed the cupcake. 4 stars 2008-07-19
New Leaf Market This is a welcome addition to the mid-coast Peninsula! They had nearly all of my favorite foods! The only thing I could not find was the chocolate spread. Very clean, bright, well-organized and great produce. 5 stars 2008-06-18
Vital Ital Calabash Seems like a throwback to another era -- quirky while abit quaint. Definitely laid-back. Restaurant staff are genuinely friendly. Food is delicious. If judged purely from a cost perspective, the simple food is overpriced for the quantity delivered, esp. in comparison to other restaurants. 3.5 stars 2008-06-01
The Usual Suspects Cafe The vegan pesto/cashew cheeze is delicious! Mint chocolate cake also delightful. Similar type of food to Herbivore, but better tasting. My 1st visit to Herbivore, it took me a year before I went back to try it again. This place - only day 5 of their being open, and I'm ready to go back tomorrow. My only "complaint" -- the menu says 9" pizza but it's really barely 8". Hey, when it comes to vegan pizza, size does matter! 4 stars 2008-05-30
Vegi Garden Enjoyed #61 the (mostly) tofu and some veggie pork as well as the veggie "duck" (bean curd sheets) with spinach. Food was tasty, decent portions, prompt service. Seemed slightly expensive for Chinese food (entrees were $9 each plus $1.75 for a bowl of brown rice), but I would return as I enjoyed the food and the picture menu is wonderful. They also gave us a complimentary black bean dessert. 3.5 stars 2008-05-21
Weird Fish Fun, cozy restaurant and tried the "fish n chips" with tofu as well as the seitan, both good, but I think the tofu slightly better. The "chips" were yummy. Love that vegan items clearly marked on menu. Very close to BART. 4 stars 2008-02-15
Garden Fresh Yummy food - ample servings. Favorites: Corn and tofu soup, Scallion pancakes, Ham bundles (w/bok choy), veggie "duck" (with mixed veggies), and one of their board specials - Black Pepper "Chicken". 4.5 stars 2008-01-22
Golden Buddha Enjoyed dining here. Food was good, served quickly. Friendly service (no communication or language issues, good English). Bonus: even on chilly winter nite, it was pleasantly warm inside with good food. Very similar food to Golden Era. 4 stars 2007-12-14
Shangri-La Consistently friendly, quick service and good food. Very reasonable prices, too. Favorites - the fragrant dry bean curd (appetizer), individual bowl of won ton soup (laced with lots of fresh ginger), crispy tofu, and spicy eggplant. Good menu selection - lots of veggie options, some faux meats too, plus unusual medicinal selections (which I haven't tried but others like). Downside - we were told pie pa tofu balls are vegan (even when served with a piece of egg shell sticking out of one ball), then they aren't (have eggs), and now they are again. Have not been back since. Trust issue. 2.5 stars 2007-11-10
Bok Choy Garden Many many dishes at this restaurant. Really used to enjoy a few dishes at this restaurant -- tofu "cheese" rolls, chow mein in black bean sauce, rainbow garden veggie dish and the general's beef. Will not return now because I am not sure what is vegan. Waitress showed us the bag of dairy (mooooo) cheese used in the "vegan" cheese rolls. Beware. 2.5 stars 2007-11-10
Herbivore Really like this space better than SF locations. Packed on a Friday nite, so slow service. Food same as other locations.... New favorite is the grilled (soy) chicken sandwich.. it's good but tasted better at the Valencia location. Macaroni salad is great option too. 4 stars 2007-11-04
San Francisco Soup Company It's fast food soup but I like it. I usually get their split pea soup -- it's $6 for a 16 oz soup (not cheap). Soup at Arabi at Rincon is also good & cheaper. But Soup co usually has 1 vegan and a few vegetarian choices. I like the fact that their website and restaurant menu labels which soups are vegetarian, dairy-free, and/or low-fat. Wish they would have more vegan choices on a daily basis. 3 stars 2007-09-23
Udupi Palace Enjoyed the vegan potato & onion dosa with sambar + coconut chutney for a reasonable $5.75. Friendly, attentive service. Would definitely return again to try different foods. 4.5 stars 2007-09-09
Kearny Street Pies Delicious vegan soup + yummy savory pies. Recommend the black bean veggie + curry yam potato. Had 2 pies + soup for $8.65 4 stars 2007-08-05
The Montara Bistro Enjoyed the 2 excellent vegan side dishes - roasted vegetables + garlic fingerling potatoes - that came with my entree (stuffed portabella mushroom, okay). Great ocean view, friendly owner-chef & staff. Very small restaurant. On a Friday nite, go early or make a reservation. 4 stars 2007-08-05
Golden Lotus Food is delicious, lots of dishes with faux meats to choose from. Carmelized chicken: yum; Vegetable Chow Mein: bland; Tofu & Eggplant dish: yum; Ginger Fish: yum. Unforunately, the indifferent and sometimes slow service spoils my enjoyment of dining out. Have been a long-time customer; over the years, portion sizes have gotten smaller and prices are getting larger. 3.5 stars 2007-07-15
Pizza Plaza Loved loved loved the vegan pizza in this all vegetarian pizzeria. Vegan pesto w/veggies AND the vegan hawaiian-both really good, but esp. love the pesto and the complexity of all the toppings together. the personal pizza, also yum, just mini! Been there several times, the vegan cheeze melted just fine, with the perfect amount. Good amount of toppings, also. Staff are friendly, too. Can freeze pizza and reheat in oven, very yumm! Have found occasionally I need to add abit of salt. Vegan Cheezecake $5, also yum. 5 stars 2007-05-15
Layonna Vegetarian Beautiful decor, delicious food, ample variety & good serving sizes. Eight people shared 8 entrees, only $12.50 with tax/tip included! So much food, 7 entrees would have been sufficient. Food was very fresh, did not taste greasy or oily. We were told all food is vegan. Ordered: Pine Nut Fish, Braised Tofu, Veggie Bamboo Reeds, Pan Fried eggplant, Curry Chicken, Golden Mushroom Noodles, Sesame chicken, Mushroom with Greens. Aside from Curry Chicken, would return and have exact same menu. 4.5 stars 2007-04-15
Malabar Cafe Food is delicious, and very reasonable for the quality. Beautiful decor. Much larger & nicer space than previous location. Try the tempeh gorang -- double yum! Service is a bit slow (as usual), otherwise I'd give them a 5-stars. One of my favorite places to eat in the Bay Area. 4 stars 2007-04-04
Medicine Eatstation Ordered a curry tofu rice dish to go. Curry sauce wasn't great. Didn't like that food was served lukewarm. Also, portion sizes are small. At $9, I won't be racing to return, but they did have a number of vegan items to choose from so maybe I just picked the wrong dish. 3 stars 2007-03-25
Tokyo Express Good selection of veg sushi. Can be busy, if you're in a hurry, good trick is to order to go as there's a separate (and shorter) pick-up line. 3.5 stars 2006-09-30
Arabi They have a great rice and lentil dish with sauteed onions on top. Although it's not an all veg place, it is one of my favorite lunch places in downtown, where the veg pickings can be slim. Good prices, too. Soup and salad for $5. 3.5 stars 2006-09-29
Komala Vilas Excellent, well-seasoned, and yummy Indian food! Could be a wait to get in; went for lunch buffet on Sat @ 2 pm and there was a queue of about 10 people waiting to be seated, but it was a short wait. Good value for money, and good tasting! During lunch buffet, all the main food items are vegan; there was buttermilk offered though. Today's offerings included cabbage & green peas, which I really liked, and I don't normally like cabbage OR peas; the other was a lentil curry which was great. Highly recommend, and I'll return again 5 stars 2006-07-15
Dharma's Natural Foods Huge menu, and I love eating out at veg restaurants, but menu selections just weren't appealing to me. For me, I would not rush to return to Dharma's but it's always nice to know it's there. Good apple pie, potstickers below average, mashed potatoes & gravy good. 3 stars 2006-07-05
Saturn Cafe For vegans, weekend brunch menu only has limited options. Vegan scramble is excellent though and garlic fries are awesome!! Fries are lightly battered and served with lots of fresh garlic - very yummy and filling enough to be a meal on its own. Friendly staff, good service, fun decor. Mel is right - the vegan peanut butter shake is super yummy (better with vanilla ice cream than chocolate) 4.5 stars 2006-07-02
Black China Bakery and Cafe Sandwich served with salad tasty but pricey at $9. Personally, having enjoyed their legendary desserts for many years, I was disappointed in the small selection and at how expensive it was at their own store--$5/slice. If you're looking for a light meal in a beautiful outdoor seating, this is a great place. 3.5 stars 2006-07-02
Fog City Pizza and Indian Food Good food; quick, competent, and friendly service. A bit pricey. Aloo gobi is the better of the veg options. Cloth napkins/tablecloths and ocean view make this a special place to dine. 3 stars 2006-05-20
Zao Noodle Bar The only vegan entree (at time of visit) was tasty but seemed overpriced for what it was (stir fry w/noodles, veggies, tofu) - $11 tax/tip included. Bustling, noisy dining experience. Server was quick to take away empty dishes and water glasses. Owner responsive to updating menu to remove confusing vegetarian legend with notation that it included fish. 3 stars 2006-05-20
Vegetarian Gourmet Really enjoyed the food and attentive service. Very similar food style to Garden Fresh (chef used to work there). Highly Recommend: Curry Vegetables, Family Style Tofu, Chen Pi Vegetarian Beef, Vegetarian Ham, Asparagus Chicken. Food tastes fresh and light (not greasy). Rating based on 12+ visits. Nice menu choice for folks who like faux meats as well as those who don't. Recommend the Chinese pancakes too. Vegetable Chow Mein and Won Ton Soup okay (I've had better and worse!). 5 stars 2006-05-14
Cafe Gratitude Tried 2 appetizers (hummus, mushrooms with pate) / 1 entree. Food good. My entree -- Soy Mucho grain bowl $9 -- overpriced for what it was (mostly rice, pate, salsa, guacamole, some kale). Waiter attentive but odd (i.e. told us he used to be vegan, when we asked why not now, he said he felt he needed to eat meat and he now felt more connected to the animals). Seemed totally out of character esp. for this restaurant .. later before the bill asked if there was anything we wanted to be acknowledged for. This false caring attitude became tedious. May go back occasionally but for this $$, prefer Medicine. Three stars for service/atmosphere, four for food, two for the hype. 3 stars 2006-02-27
Pacifica Pet Hospital Dr. Hurlbut is an excellent vet who *really* cares for all animals. He's a "5". Office support staff is a "2". Two cats require special diets and when we tried to special order food, it's always been a disaster (order "lost" or given to another customer). 3.5 stars 2006-02-06
BayLeaf Cafe Tasty rolls (mighty carrot, artichoke tofu), delicious daily Indian specials (look for the Mung Bean Curry Stew - it's great!), yummy quesadillas and excellent curry carrot soup, combined with the owners care and compassion, make this a wonderful place to dine. BayLeaf is involved and supportive of the local veg/AR community. Great desserts too. 4.5 stars 2006-02-03
Medicine New-Shojin Eatstation Really fresh, well-seasoned food. For lunch, tried rice bowl served with pickled vegetables and miso soup, plus a yam croquette. For dinner, tried 3 .entrees: tempura, nijiri sushi (not as good as the Medicine Roll) and sweet dumpling squash. Good service. Very convenient to BART too. Beautiful decor, unusual cafeteria style seating. 5 stars 2005-12-08
Feel Real Cafe Music quieter than previous visit, this time could have a conversation still. Food really good (tried 4 items) but low rating due to workers smoking inside the back room of the restaurant and exposing unwilling customers to second-hand smoke; we did talk to staff about it. Also found restaurant still closes unexpectedly despite listed hours. 1 stars 2005-12-03
Manzanita Restaurant Organic. Vegan. Buffet. Three magical words! And it was yummy too. I've tried many veg restaurants and I'd rate this one as a "must try". Note - no faux meats. At buffet, really enjoyed the rice "burgers" (patties) served with a pumpkin/basil gravy. Everything tasted great, except the cabbage soup (too bland)... and I could go back for more of my favorites! Yum yum yum! Will return. As others said, baked goods need work. 5 stars 2005-11-19
Whole Foods Market Good selection of veg & natural foods. In-store deli convenient choice for quick vegan lunch. Additionally, the entire Whole Foods chain carries only cage-free eggs! 3.5 stars 2005-11-10
Cha-Ya Good Food! Love the fried avocado sushi! It can get crowded, so be prepared to wait for a table. Not good for a large group. Also pretty expensive if you want to leave the restaurant not feeling hungry. 3.5 stars 2005-09-18
MaggieMudd Absolutely yummy! Good selection of vegan ice cream flavors and dessert creations. Flavors are very rich and complex. Menu shows which items / creations are vegan. The first month I discovered how easy it was to get to, we were there every week! Try non-dairy Peanut Butter Palooka or Cookies-n-cream. The only reason I haven't given MM a 5 is because they also sell dairy-based ice creams. 4.5 stars 2005-09-16
Layonna Vegetarian Good place to shop for faux meats (mostly frozen) and Asian style veggie foods (like agar blocks; grind it into flakes to make vegan cheezecake). Sells TVP in different sizes in bulk. Conveniently close to New World Vegetarian restaurant as well. 4 stars 2005-08-21
Lu Lai Garden Really huge menu, without descriptions, which makes it difficult to choose. I liked what we ordered, and would return if I was in the area. Reasonable prices. Big restaurant with good seating for large groups (round tables). 3.5 stars 2005-08-18
Vegetarian House Huge menu, mostly vegan (non vegan items marked). Has large round tables for pleasant group dinners and conversations. Clean, open atmosphere. Faux fish in claypot yummy, as was the fresh carrot cake. (On another visit the chocolate cake was old/dry). 4 stars 2005-08-14
Zante's Pizza & Indian Food We asked if the "vegan Indian pizza" is vegan. Employees say yes. Ask if it contains dairy, employees say no. Asked 2 people about ingredients in crust, both said MILK! Sadly, no longer confident that pizza crust is vegan.... Regrettable, since it was a yummy indian (cheeseless) pizza --well-seasoned, good toppings, nice crisp crust. 1 stars 2005-08-12
Pacifica Farmers Market Good selection of produce including organic, as well as refrigerated/frozen vegetarian food products and staple items. And of course vegan cookies! 4 stars 2005-08-03
Herbivore Despite spotty food and service quality, I do like Herbivore for the varied all-vegan menu. My favorites appetizers are the zaatar and spring rolls, with favorite entrees including beans & brown rice, sometimes the tofu sandwich. Big note: restaurant is often very noisy (poor acoustics) which makes it extremely difficult to have a conversation or even enjoy your meal. 3.5 stars 2005-08-02
Other Avenues Very nice neighborhood natural foods store with bulk and organic selections. Excellent quality produce. Volunteers can even get discounts! Also sells vegan Black China and other desserts. 4 stars 2005-08-02
Good Karma I love the big signs outside proclaiming VEGAN FOOD. Had a rice plate with 3 items for $5 -- Thai curry delicious, stuffed tofu good, & fried chicken was kinda eerie and reminscient of non-veg days. Good selection for such a small place, heavy on the faux meat products. Sen (the owner) also very friendly. 5 stars 2005-07-30
Annapoorna I visited on the weekend, wanting to have lunch. For vegans beware -- staff inconsistent on which dishes are vegan or which had "just a little bit" of ghee in them. So... I went to BayLeaf in Palo Alto, and had a delicious and totally satisfying all vegan meal there. 2 stars 2005-05-28
Supreme Vegan Really liked the battered tofu sticks and banana cream pie. "un-fish" dinner plate was simple and seemed overpriced for what it was; good quantity of food though. I was disappointed that the soul food items were not available; I'd recommend folks call ahead to check first. 3 stars 2005-04-16
Kaleva Overall good food; well-seasoned and just the right level of spice on the dinners. A bit on the pricey side for the amount of food. 3 stars 2005-03-22
New Ganges Service was good (abit too much), ambience a bit awkward tho. Ordered all vegan food. Samosas were very spicy but not really seasoned. Requested entrees as mild, result = bland. Food wasn't great, portions small. Much better places to eat veg, esp. in SF! 2 stars 2004-11-22
Mother Nature Vegetarian Cuisine I enjoyed the food, ample portion sizes, and thought it reasonably priced for our special dinner that Bob arranged for our BAV group of 20. It was odd that she wouldn't give us full-size dinner plates to eat from though. 3.5 stars 2004-11-04
Spice by the bay The food is well-presented and yummy. I also like local businesses that are involved and supportive of the local community, which Spice by the bay and Jyoti (the owner/chef) are. Plus, Jyoti knows when to make the food spicy or not. 5 stars 2004-10-05
Urban Forage - Mission Okay, after a few visits, I'm upping my rating from 3 to 4 stars based on the cooked foods I've tried. I recommend the zaatar (appetizer) and these 2 entrees: Sultan's Plate, Magik Mushroom (latter is good with an extra scoop of rice). Restaurant decor is very warm and welcoming, and staff is friendly/efficient. Nice to see more vegan options in the Mission! 4 stars 2004-07-03
Animal Place Everyone needs to visit Animal Place. It is awesome to have this incredible opportunity to connect with the animals on such a personal level. Thank you to Kim and the other staff & volunteers for taking such good care of the critters. 5 stars 2004-06-13
Trader Joe's As mentioned, good prices on staples, and basic selection of ORGANICS too -- frozen vegetables and canned beans, tomato sauces/paste, etc. Best prices on Luna & Clif Bars! 4 stars 2004-05-29
New Leaf Market Medium sized natural foods store on main drag of Santa Cruz. Several vegan selections in deli case, ample vegan dessert selections, too. 4 stars 2004-05-29
Flacos After hearing so many rave reviews posted to SFBAVEG, I tried it for myself and I am now one of those giving a rave review! Very yummy! 4 stars 2004-05-28
Kokila's Kitchen Friendly people and food is good. Always ample vegan selections. Very affordably priced, too. 4 stars 2004-05-27
Hulu House I have tried this restaurant a couple of times over the last few years.. Each time I've found it overpriced and the dishes are a bit bland. But your mileage may vary as I know this place has its supporters too. 2 stars 2004-05-23
Geranium For a new restaurant (less than a week) excellent service and organization. Food was attractively presented, but portions were small & pricey (still hungry after $14 entree). If they expanded to include more vegan options with larger serving sizes, and I heard good reviews from others, I might give it another try. This rating is regional--many other/better veg restaurants in SF. 2 stars 2004-05-23
STOA Restaurant & Wine Bar Before the move to downtown Palo Alto, this restaurant was very promising in offering upscale, veggie cuisine. Sadly, they now serve fish. I'd rather spend my veggie dollars supporting a vegetarian restaurant, not one that serves animals. 0 stars 2004-05-23
Juicey Lucy's An interesting place to experience! While it's all organic, prices are a bit high. Everything is made fresh, while you wait... and wait. But it has a lot of character and charm, so your mileage may vary. 2 stars 2004-05-23
Amarin Thai Food is delicious, and portions are okay if you have a small appetite. Major shortcoming is that communication is difficult with restaurant staff and service is lacking. 2 stars 2004-05-21
Rainbow Grocery They sell a great selection of vegan dessert items! Black China cake (single layer) for $16! All veg except for cat/dog food & supplements I believe 4 stars 2004-05-16
Lanesplitter Pizza & Pub Good place to go when you're craving a pizza! Servings are big. Calzone could easily feed two, also. Free delivery if you live in Berkeley. 4 stars 2004-05-11
Ananda Fuara You have got to try their veggie burger! The burger is awesome! It is made from grains and vegetables (from scratch) and very yummy. Because they butter the buns, it's not vegan if you order it straight from the menu. I order it vegan (they just leave the butter off) and it is awesome. This is my favorite item on their menu, and in my taste buds, the best burger available at a veg restaurant. I highly recommend it. They also serve brunch one weekend a month. 4 stars 2004-05-10
Sparks Sparks puts Guerneville on the map! Food is delicious! Very reasonably priced, too. 5 stars 2004-05-06
