Udupi Palace Just opened, but already popular. There was a bit of a wait, & our server confused a portion of our order with our neighbors. Instead of serving us the right dishes or comping us, they a)tried to get us to exchange half-eaten food w/each other & then b)charged us for our original orders, some of which we didn't get. The food was ok but the chutneys tasted very overspiced. I'll try again, though.. 1.5 stars 2008-07-17
Green Earth Natural Foods Good selection of organic produce, natural products, and veggie options (Quorn, deli slices, etc.). Plus, many times the owner gives you a discount "just because." 4.5 stars 2007-07-06
Samovar Tea Lounge I've been the the lounge over at Yerba Buena, and the tofu curry is very tasty! it's a nice option for those of us who don't want food court food before a performance or movie. 4.5 stars 2007-07-06
The Stanford Inn A romantic inn up near Eureka. We had a room with a view- literally! We could see the water, horses, gardens, everything. Fireplace was toasty, and everything was really high class. The food at the Ravens, though, wasn't as good as expected. Well, it's no Millennium. 4.5 stars 2007-07-06
Bok Choy Garden Bok Choy Garden did for me what Layonna's across the way didn't: the food had flavor, the waiter knew what he was talking about, and we enjoyed our meal! The stuffed mushrooms are a must. 4 stars 2007-07-06
Rainbow Grocery rainbow is the best! well, except for some of the prices... but it's a co-op and not albertsons/whole foods/etc. great staff, wonderful products. really, can i just live here? i'll even pay rent. 5 stars 2007-07-06
Cafe Gratitude The service here is a little more "touch and go" than at the Harrison location, but the back porch and huge communal table make up for it! Plus, I don't have to hike past warehouses to find my dinner. 4 stars 2007-07-06
New Ganges Food is yummy, especially carrot pudding.Good location.Owner has gotten much better (sure, he still pushes things, but he doesn't stand right over your shoulder anymore). Recently, I went on a Sunday evening, and the restaurant was empty. Hopefully more people will try it. Soon. Please... 4.5 stars 2007-07-06
Papalote I frequent the Papalote at Fulton/Masonic, and it's awesome to have great veggie mexican options! Thumbs up for the soyrizo, tofu mole, and other tofu/veggie options. Plus the nachos are incredible, and the salsa is unique. Mmmm. Vamos a la Papalote! 5 stars 2007-07-06
Daily Health It's small, and sometimes the workers ignore you, but it's a good place to pick up supplements, juice, or soba-like nori rolls. 3.5 stars 2007-07-06
Trader Joe's I don't know if I could survive without Trader Joe's. Their soymilk is great, as is the textured tofu and tofurkey deli type meats. I also like their microwaveable (and oven-friendly) veggie meals. Plus their vanilla paste is incredible to bake with:) 4.5 stars 2007-07-06
Boogaloos Great veggie brunch options, like tofu scramble and vegan biscuits and gravy. The staff is nice and laid-back, just like I like my mornings. 4.5 stars 2007-07-06
Jay's Cheesesteak Love love love love love the seitan cheese"steaks." Personally, I'll take a pizza seitan cheesesteak anytime. Or a mushroom one. Or a teriyaki. Or a cherry pepper.... 5 stars 2007-07-06
Mekong Good veggie options near the AMC 14 Van Ness (of which I try not to frequent). The potato curry was excellent. 4 stars 2007-07-06
Feel Real Cafe have been many times, dude, and it's all rad!!! tofu "scramble" w/tomato chutney and mashed potato pancake was savory and delicous. tempeh sandwich was good, but a little on the small side.veggie burger=awesome!!! the green lantern was ok, but i prefer the "breakfasty" items. 4.5 stars 2007-07-06
Pizza Plaza Amazing pizza- the veggie hawaiian rocks! Plus the owner's really nice. Mmmm. I wish there was a Pizza Plaza in SF:) 5 stars 2007-07-06
Cafe Gratitude The date shake is delish, and the daily specials are always tasty. The service may be a little spotty, but I always feel good knowing I ate a compassionate meal. Yeah, I AM compassionate! 4 stars 2007-07-06
The Plant Cafe Organic Ack is all I can say. The time I went, they had a hard time with the pancakes, and the service staff seemed stressed. I won't go out of my way to go bck. 2.5 stars 2007-07-06
Dosa Hmmm. Maybe something was off the night I was there. Our table was on the edge of the route to the bathroom, and many times we felt like other patrons were literally on top of our dosa. We didn't get much direction from our waitress, which meant that everything we ordered ended up tasting the same. 2 stars 2007-07-06
Kearny Street Pies Tasty little savory pies and soup. Went late in the evening right before closing, and the owner gave us free soup, which honestly was even better than the pies. 4 stars 2007-07-06
Cha-Ya Agree, large menu, but I wish they'd focus on doing less dishes well and not lots of dishes mediocre. Flavoring is pretty bland, and many things tend to taste the same after awhile. Take cash, as they don't take credit cards. I prefer Minako just a few blocks away- tons of tasty vegan sushi and dishes (incl. homemade udon). 2 stars 2006-12-26
Layonna Vegetarian menu is huge, and staff are friendly. there was confusion with our order, so much so that the staff couldn't even figure out why the flavors were off (the hot mandarin beef tasted like black bean beef) or the item not at all like the description (the house delight didn't come with the crispy taro and been curd sheet as described in the menu). spicy sour soup was tasty, and will have to try again. 2.5 stars 2006-12-01
Golden Buddha first time i really enjoyed it, but going back, the awful service was more glaring (no water refills, 15 min. wait time to get menus, botched take-out orders, etc.). and nothing was quite as crispy as the original GE- especially the gourmet chicken we ordered. and the claypot flavor was off- too much spice which covered the coconut curry flavoring. i'll try again, but my expectations will be low. 2.5 stars 2006-07-17
Enjoy Vegetarian found sauces to be bland w/very little flavor.service was chaotic, & the lighting was too bright.i highly recommend shangri-la over enjoy veggie. much higher quality of dishes for about the same $. 0.5 stars 2005-12-04
Judahlicious Selection was great, and I'm so happy that they serve Maggie Mudd's! 5 stars 2005-04-02
Saha Inventive ten crust pizza, mushroom ravioli w/mango sauce, & red curry with tofu.Lots of veggie options, & chef tries to make at least 1 veggie soup a night.Delicious dishes & wide array of options. 4 stars 2005-04-02
Ya Mo Thai Kitchen Apparently, what we thought was the menu wasn't. The owner/chef/bartender got mad that we didn't ask for a menu, so he yelled at us. He was intimidating, so we left. Would not go back. 0 stars 2004-07-16
Vege House So yummy! Try the egg rolls (no egg, but with carrot and other goodies inside) and the chili tofu. Feel free to ask for help and suggestions. Everything is good, and they sell their own soy milk. 4 stars 2004-07-16
Pizza Orgasmica Lots of seating and a fireplace.10 veggie pizzas on the menu, plus numerous veggie toppings (but no soy cheese).Fave: Honeymoon pizza. No free refills on sodas.Service can be slow.Never tried delivery. 4 stars 2004-07-01
MaggieMudd MaggieMudd is the best! Delicous flavors of EXCELLENT soy ice cream. There's also "regular" ice cream for your "regular" friends.Maggie's creates wonderful sundaes, shakes, and cakes. Don't miss this! 5 stars 2004-06-29
Mariachi's Great veggie options. Thai tofu burrito was great, with lots of veggies and tofu. Peanut sauce was yummy, too. Horchata was good. Pleasant staff. 5 stars 2004-06-29
Herbivore Best veggie brunch.Back patio is nice.Had peanut pad thai (very spicy) & german chocolate cake (yum yum) last time.Tried the cosmopolitan, made with pom juice and sake, which was great.Service=spotty. 5 stars 2004-06-21
Minako Organic Japanese Cuisine Best sushi around, hands (&chopsticks) down.Inventive rolls & good variety of veg options. Prefer the specialty rolls.Check out the "underwater" bathroom while you're waiting. Not good 4 large groups. 5 stars 2004-06-21
Geranium French toast was ok; it had lots of fruit topping, but became too sweet. BLT was below average, with white bread & morningstar bacon(tempeh bacon would have been great).Staff was capable. 2 stars 2004-06-21
Urban Forage - Mission Decor is gorgeous: dark woods and lots of greenery. Big menu. Dragon bowl was yummy, but the date shake was too liquidy and tasteless. Nice cream was yummy, but had a blunt finish to it. I'd go back. 3 stars 2004-06-21
Golden Era Great food. Faves: #46(full entree), #48, and eggplant clay pot. Soups are all good, and they serve brown rice. Sometimes the service isn't great, but I go for the food (which is better than G. Lotus) 5 stars 2004-06-20
Club Waziema Good all-you-can eat veggie Ethiopian on Mondays. Be aware that Waziema doesn't open its doors until after 6pm. 3 stars 2004-06-20
