DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE: Please visit Bay Area Vegetarians event calendar for more information or updates on this and other vegetarian and animal rights events.=0D=0A=0D=0Ahttp://www.bayareaveg.org/events.php#2052 =0D=0A=0D=0AHost: Tammy=0D=0A=0D=0ANotes:=0D=0A=0D=0ABay Area Vegetarians has two book clubs; "The Vegan Book Club" reading fiction books, and this one, "Food For Thought Book Club", reading nonfiction books on the topics of vegetarianism, animal rights, and nutrition. While our sister book club, the Vegan Book Club may be full, we, The Food for Thought Book Club, welcome new members to join us. As a general guideline, everyone is welcome to join us (both veg & non-veg), and we especially encouraging aspiring and new veg*ns to join us. =0D=0A=0D=0AWe are a supportive, low-key, and friendly group. Meeting attendance ranges from 7 to 12 people. Please note, in consideration of others, including our animal friends, all food and drink consumed during book discussions are vegan. =0D=0A=0D=0AThis month's selection The longest struggle : animal advocacy from Pythagoras to PETA by Norm Phelps (please check back, or stay tuned for an announcement to SFBAVEG or our e-newsletter)=0D=0A=0D=0AIntroduction: Tearing off the cloak of invisibility -- The roots of evil -- The challenge of Ahimsa -- The challenge comes west -- Judaism crafts a compromise -- Jesus vs. aristotle -- Secular offerings to a savage God -- A few rays of enlightenment -- "Pain is pain" -- "Harassing the lower orders" -- The great meddler -- The pit of despair -- Requiem for a little brown dog -- Ahimsa returns to the west -- One step forward, twenty steps back -- Heralds of change -- The age of the pioneers -- The sixties' last hurrah -- Direct action : striking back on land and sea -- Things fall apart -- But the center takes hold -- Conclusion: The dream and the work.=0D=0A=0D=0A"In the first chapter of his very readable history of the animal-protection philosophy, Phelps refers to the killing of nonhuman animals as "the crime with no beginning." In other words, humans have hunted animals since before they were human, and carried this exploitation of animals throughout history. If civilization can be defined as the human break with nature, then all human civilizations have been built on animal slavery (domestication) and the systematic killing of animals. Phelps, a vegetarian and animal-activist author, follows the history of philosophical thought about the exploitation of animals and various animal advocates who have fought for animal rights from roughly 600 BCE to the present. These philosophical underpinnings provide the roots of the animal-rights movement, the history of which fills the rest of the book. The founding of the RSPCA; its American counterpart, the ASPCA; the antivivisection movement; and the more radical actions of the ALF and PETA are all covered. Phelps wears his personal beliefs on his sleeve but provides a comprehensive history of the animal-rights movement."=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0ATime: 1 pm=0D=0A=0D=0ALocation - San Pedro Valley Park, 600 Oddstad Boulevard, Pacifica 94044 - (650)355-8289 =0D=0A=0D=0A--Pacifica is ~10 minutes south of SF, and this beautiful county park is home to many wildlife.
