Three discussions will be in SF and three in the South Bay, alternating venues every other month.=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0AStarting in January 2007, we will launch the new book discussion series with an informal and supportive discussion of an excellent book by Matthew Sculley, Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy.=0D=0A=0D=0ASculley is a journalist and former speechwriter for President George W. Bush. Says Karen Dawn of Dawnwatch: =0D=0A=0D=0AMatthew Scully has written a beautiful book in which he bases his argument for animal protection not on rights, liberation, or ethics, but on mercy. He tells us, "We are called to treat them with kindness, not because they have rights or power or some claim to equality, but in a sense because they don't; because they all stand unequal and powerless before us. Animals are so easily overlooked, their interests so easily brushed aside. Whenever we humans enter the world, from our farms, to the local animal shelter to the African savanna, we enter as lords of the earth bearing strange powers of terror and mercy alike." You can read her full review on Amazon=0D=0A=0D=0APlease plan to arrive a few minutes early so we can start introductions and discussion promptly at 3 pm. Please note - our discussion will be based on the book.=0D=0A=0D=0ABased on input from those attending, there may be a dinner following the discussion.=0D=0A=0D=0ALocation - MaggieMudd, 903 Cortland Avenue, San Francisco=0D=0A=0D=0APlease RSVP by clicking here=0D=0A=0D=0AThanks your interest in this selection of the veg/AR book club. =0D=0A=0D=0ANote: There is a separate BAVeg Book Club reader general fiction.
