Christine Dickson will once again be offering her popular Secrets of Vegan Baking Classes with Bay Area Vegetarians!  In 2007, many of you will remember the Secrets of Vegan Baking classes held at Sur La Table in SF’s Union Square.   This class is now being held at Whole Foods in San Mateo.

Christine has also created the Secrets of Vegan Baking website with Video Demonstration, Free Sample Recipes, and Baking Tips.

She will be giving a free presentation during our 2/28 Vegan Food Party, and we’ll be giving away one of her vegan cookie mixes!

Thank you to  Christine for once again offering these classes, and to Whole Foods for underwriting this class with space and ingredients.  The San Mateo Whole Foods is also offering a vegan raw foods class on 3/9 with Patti Searle ($35 , more info )

And the real good news is that it’s being run by the same family who first brought us Golden Lotus in Oakland, then Golden Era in San Francisco, and most recently Merit in Sunnyvale.  While under the same family management, it will be operated under the Loving Hut brand.

It will be in a high traffic food court, offering a smaller scale of food than the current restaurants.  Similar style to the Golden Lotus steam table lunch offerings (yum!)

Cha-Ya

Cha-Ya has closed their 9th Street restaurant in San Francisco, which opened last summer. You can still find their delicious Japanese vegan cuisine at the original Berkeley location and their Valencia location in San Francisco.

Organization description: Animal Place is a sanctuary for farmed animals and education center for the public. It operates two facilities – a permanent sanctuary in Grass Valley, CA and an adoption center in Vacaville, CA. The headquarters is located on 600-acres in Grass Valley, CA. The adoption center, Rescue Ranch, is on 60-acres in Vacaville, CA (90 miles south/west of Grass Valley).

Job Title: Animal Care Manager for Grass Valley sanctuary.

Job description

1.         Supervise animal caregiver staff, volunteers and interns

2.         Oversee all animal husbandry (health checks, medications, veterinary care)

3.         Assist with all aspects of animal care (cleaning barns, raking pastures, feeding animals)

4.         Help with all miscellaneous farm chores

5.         Fill in during animal rescues and emergencies

6.         Manage inventory and ordering of animal feed, bedding, medical supplies, etc.

7.         Maintain and update animal database and animal care manual

8.         Assist with volunteer training classes and orientations

9.         Help with other sanctuary tasks as needed (e.g. farm tours, information tabling)

10.       Represent Animal Place at conferences and events

The goal of UG is to promote eating veg by making it as simple as possible to find restaurants serving veg food.  To support the best restaurants based on your reviews, it creates the Top Ten list of veg restaurants.  This is currently a straight average (total number of points divided by number of reviews).

For example:
Millennium has 34 reviews and a rating (average) of 4.34
Udupi Palace has 9 reviews and a rating (average) of 4.33

We need a math whiz to help us create a formula that also reflects the number of reviews the restaurant has, as well, in the final rating.
