Hundreds more stopped by our booth to say hello, ask questions about vegan protein sources, egg and dairy substitutes, get vegan recipes, learn the truth about “humane” meat, eggs & dairy, and simply learn more about a compassionate and cruelty-free lifestyle.

And then there were those who looked from a distance at our model of battery caged hens, read our sign about WHY VEGAN, but didn’t approach. As one blogger frankly posted in a reference to Bay Area Vegetarians “various ‘activist’ vendors pushing everything from a vegan lifestyle (been avoiding that booth)”.

Thank you to our star volunteers who staffed the info table during this two day event, Julie, Dyanna, Rennie, Drew, Jeff, and Ravi, to Tammy for organizing & leafleting, & to Rennie for bringing the delicious chocolate pie (vegan, of course).

And a big welcome to our newest members from the Maker Faire 2008 San Mateo!

Bay Area Vegetarians has an opportunity to table at a wonderful event called Maker Faire and we need YOUR help to make that happen. Last year 45,000 people attended and this year promises to be even bigger.

Volunteers are needed for Saturday and Sunday between 10 am and 6 pm. We know this is short notice, but we were only just invited through a random connection so we really hope we can pull together to be a voice for veganism!

NO previous experience is necessary. We just ask that you’re a friendly person, already vegan or vegetarian committed to transitioning towards vegan. All materials, etc. are already available - all we need is you!

Click HERE to see the current volunteer shift openings on the event calendar link.

And, truly, you don’t need any previous experience to volunteer — all you need is a willingness to share information about veg*nism that will indeed change lives.

Bay Area Veg will continue with our regular outreach opportunities (letter writing parties, leafleting, KFC Cruelty protests) as well as special opportunities throughout the spring and summer. Please email us if you have ideas or suggestions, or would like to be more closely involved in planning.

“I love zipping through a line of people seated on the curb, every one of them holding their hands up for a Vegetarian Starter Kit. But even better is walking back down that line a few minutes later and watching people reading about animal cruelty and cruelty-free veg eating. What a great feeling of accomplishment.”

“Giving people the information they need to change their lives is so empowering. It feels great to make a difference. It’s especially wonderful when people who originally declined change their minds and turn around and ask us for one.”

“One person asked if this was about eating vegetarian to reduce cruelty to animals. I said “yes” and he said “I can do that, thanks for the information”

Thanks to our wonderful crew of leprachaun volunteers — Alex, Tammy, Jack, Mark, Libba, Tattwan, Bobby and Jordan. You can find more leprechaun photographs by Jordan & Libba in the photo gallery).

Whole grains. Nonfat. Cheap. Easy to make. Any recipe with those adjectives is bound to also be…boring. Right? Wrong. Healthy recipes can be boring, no doubt about it, but they don’t have to be. If you have any recipes that you force yourself to make and eat because they’re good for you, rip them up and use them to make a piñata (which might taste better than the recipe).

When we eat or serve boring food, we’re doing more harm than good. If our friends eat our boring vegan food they get nervous about the whole vegan thing and become more resistant to hearing about animal suffering. Who wants to go from BBQ burgers and chocolate cake to unseasoned brown rice and carob bars? That’s a terrifying idea to a carnivore and he’ll resist the message in order to protect himself from bad food.

Give a carnivore a delicious vegan meal, though, and watch those mental brick walls crumble.

Below are two super-easy recipes that fit the bill.

Mushroom Barley Soup
Curried Red Lentil and Cauliflower Salad
