Live Strong and Long – SF LGBT Community

Andrew Z, an active BAVeg volunteer and member of the LGBT community, has written and designed the Live Strong and Long website for the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.

Says Andrew, “For some time, I’ve felt that there’s a special need for information about vegetarianism in the gay community. I have friends with HIV who have experienced improved health on a vegetarian diet, and was able to confirm this with a reputable doctor, and so I feel it’s very important to get this information out to the community to enhance their treatment options.

“I’ve been noticing that many people with HIV still carry yesterday’s belief that animal protein is necessary, even though it’s contrary to modern science. Many in the gay community are into bodybuilding, and often shun vegetarianism due to the beliefs that plant protein can’t build muscle, and that soy has feminizing properties. Other gay sub-cultures celebrate a “manly” high-cholesterol and high-fat diet, along with its resulting physique, and may view vegetarians as frail and effeminate.

“However, I know of many who are developing diabetes and heart disease by their 40s, but don’t seem to realize they have options to control their health. Also, the gay community may be more open to nontraditional ideas and new information, and I hope they may be more sensitive to the plight of animals, being an oppressed minority themselves.

“Thanks to Alvaro, Warren, Tammy, Chris & my brother Kevin for their assistance and support.”

  1. “I have friends with HIV who have experienced improved health on a vegetarian diet, and was able to confirm this with a reputable doctor, and so I feel it’s very important to get this information out to the community to enhance their treatment options.” Any information about a way to improve health deserves to be published… so anyone could see. Anyway, is good to see that there are people around that still care.
